Crafting the Legend: Developing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

In this episode of The Game Maker's Notebook, host Adam Orth sits down with Creative Director Axel Torvinius and Design Director Jens Andersen from Machine Games to discuss their journey in creating the critically acclaimed Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The conversation explores the studio's philosophy, the challenges of working with a beloved IP, and the bold decision to utilize a first-person perspective.

The First-Person Choice: A Strategic Identity

One of the most debated aspects of the game's announcement was the decision to adopt a first-person perspective rather than the traditional third-person format popularized by titles like Uncharted. Axel and Jens clarify that this was never a difficult choice for the studio; it was an extension of their "DNA" and expertise.

"We knew from the get-go that the first thing we need to show... would be to show that this is a first-person game and why we think that's the way to go," says Torvinius. By focusing on immersive mechanics—such as the whip, traversal, and hand-to-hand combat—the team aimed to make players feel like Indiana Jones. They trusted their process, noting that once players actually got their hands on the game, skepticism quickly turned into validation, as the first-person view allowed for a more intimate connection to the character and environment.

The "Holy Trinity" of Development

Machine Games operates on a set of guiding principles, which Jens Andersen describes as their "three core pillars": Art, Gameplay, and Narrative, all bound together by technology. This structure is essential to their studio identity. "If you're listening in your studio and you don't have some kind of guiding pillars... you should probably do that," Andersen advises.

For The Great Circle, these studio pillars were paired with "IP pillars." The team constantly asked, "What would Indy do?" This question served as a filter for every design decision, from the grittiest puzzle details to the structure of side missions. By keeping the narrative locked down early in production, they ensured that every gameplay interaction supported the story, preventing the project from feeling like a disjointed collection of mechanics.

Recreating Hallowed Ground: The Raiders Opening

Perhaps the most daring creative choice was the recreation of the iconic opening scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark. The developers acknowledged this was a "huge risk" and "hallowed ground." However, it served as a vital design exercise. It helped the team define what Indiana Jones mechanics should feel like—swapping the sandbag for the idol and solving environmental traps. Through collaboration with Lucasfilm Games and access to original archives, they managed to craft an experience that honored the source material while functioning as a modern, playable game sequence.

The Troy Baker Factor

Performance was a make-or-break element for the project. The team emphasizes that Troy Baker’s performance as Indiana Jones was not just a voice-over role, but a full-body performance capture that brought the necessary nuance and range to the character. "If we didn't have Troy, I have a hard time seeing... any real alternative," says Torvinius. Baker’s dedication, which included participating in blockout sessions and contributing as a collaborator rather than just a hired actor, was instrumental in securing Harrison Ford’s approval and grounding the game's emotional stakes.

Reflecting on the Journey

As the team looks back on the four-to-five-year development cycle, they express a sense of profound gratitude. Developing a game of this magnitude is a "hellfire experience" that creates strong bonds within the studio. Despite the "tunnel vision" that often occurs toward the end of production, the team remained committed to their mission. By staying true to their pillars and trusting in their vision, Machine Games successfully navigated the complexities of a legendary IP, delivering a project that is, in the words of the host, "universally adored" and a true testament to their craft.
