📋 Summary

The Tragic Disappearance of a Small-Town Life

In early 1982, the quiet community of Minocqua, Wisconsin, was shaken by a series of bank robberies. However, on April 28th, the situation turned from a criminal investigation into a horrific tragedy when 33-year-old Barbara Mendez was found brutally murdered inside the Park City Credit Union. Barbara, a devoted mother and active member of the Assemblies of God church, was discovered by her manager, Helen Gray, after failing to attend a Wednesday evening church service. The crime scene was gruesome; Barbara had been “brutally beaten” with what investigators later identified as a “metal pry bar,” leaving her with extensive skull fractures.

The Illusion of a Perfect Alibi

Initially, law enforcement faced two theories: a robbery gone wrong or a personal vendetta. While $2,700 was missing from the register, the fact that $17,000 remained untouched in an open safe suggested that the robbery was a staged distraction. Barbara’s husband, Robin “Bob” Mendez, quickly became the primary suspect. However, Bob provided a seemingly “watertight alibi,” supported by his young daughters, Dawn and Christy, and a teenager named Jody, who claimed to have spoken to Bob by phone during the time of the murder. Because of these statements, the investigation stalled for decades, leaving the murder of the “shy but beautiful” woman as a haunting cold case.

Unveiling the Deception

The truth began to surface only after the persistence of Barbara’s daughters, who, as adults, realized they had been “coached, manipulated, [and] brainwashed” by their father. The investigation into Bob’s character revealed a dark reality: he had been sexually abusing Jody, a minor and close friend of his daughters. Barb had discovered this betrayal and, as her friend Sherry Anderson noted, was preparing to “confront her husband” and potentially leave him. Bob, desperate to maintain his facade as a “good Christian” and “fine husband,” murdered his wife to silence her and protect his secret life.

The Path to Justice

It took until 2017 for the Cold Justice investigative team and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office to finally dismantle Bob’s lies. By re-interviewing witnesses—including Jody, who had since become a voice for abuse victims—and analyzing the “thousands of pages” of the case file, authorities confirmed that the alibi was a fabrication. Bob Mendez had used his work-issued pry bar to end his wife’s life before attempting to frame a robbery. In 2018, nearly 36 years after the crime, Bob was arrested. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison in 2019.

A Legacy of Love

The case remains a stark reminder of the hidden darkness that can exist behind a “storybook” life. Barbara Mendez left behind a final, poignant Valentine’s Day letter to her daughters, written just weeks before her death, which served as a testament to her love for her children. Through the relentless determination of Dawn and Christy, the truth finally emerged, ensuring that their mother’s memory was honored and her killer was brought to account, preventing him from ever harming another soul.

But when Manaqua police got a frantic 911 call from Park City Credit Union on the evening of April 28th, what they would find inside was far worse than a robbery.
Even though police would quickly put together a picture of what transpired inside of that bank, it would take another 34 years for law enforcement to finally get to the bottom of one of the most infamous crimes in Wisconsin history.
But before we get into that story, if you're a fan of the strange, dark and mysterious delivered in story format, then you've come to the right podcast, because that's all we do, and we upload twice a week, once on Monday and once on Thursday.
