📋 Summary

The Tragic Case and Long-Awaited Justice for Wendy Jerome

In November 1984, the life of 14-year-old Wendy Jerome was cut short in a brutal act of violence that would haunt her family and the Rochester community for decades. As detailed in the podcast, Wendy vanished after leaving a friend's house, only to be discovered later in a secluded, unlit alcove at School 33. Despite the efforts of investigators at the time, the case went cold, leaving behind a grieving mother, Marlene, and a community searching for answers.

A Brutal Crime and Early Missteps

Wendy was found with severe injuries, including blunt force trauma to the head and multiple skull fractures. While investigators initially suspected several individuals—including a man named Dale who had self-inflicted wounds and a local man named Michael Ross—none of the leads resulted in an arrest. The investigation was hampered by the limitations of 1980s forensic technology and the lack of a clear suspect. For years, Marlene lived with the agony of not knowing the truth, often plagued by horrific, inaccurate mental images of her daughter's final moments.

The Turning Point: DNA and Persistence

The case remained dormant until 2016, when Sergeant Gus Venosa of the Rochester Major Crimes Unit took over the cold case files. His dedication to the case proved transformative. By leveraging advancements in DNA technology, including the use of familial DNA testing—a tool that allows investigators to identify suspects through their relatives in the CODIS database—the team finally gained traction.

In 2020, two hits in the CODIS database pointed toward a family lineage, eventually leading investigators to Timothy Williams. Williams, who had lived just houses away from the crime scene in 1984, had previously avoided suspicion. Investigators utilized a perfectly preserved sexual assault kit from a 1992 case involving Williams to secure a DNA match, confirming his involvement in Wendy's murder.

Seeking Accountability

Upon his arrest in 2020, Williams attempted to lie about his whereabouts and his relationship with the victim, claiming he had met Wendy and engaged in a consensual sexual relationship. The jury, however, saw through these fabrications, which were clearly aimed at explaining away the presence of his DNA. In March 2024, Timothy Williams was found guilty of three counts of second-degree murder, marking the first conviction in New York State secured through the use of familial DNA testing. He was sentenced to 25 years to life.

A Legacy of Hope

For Marlene, the conviction provided the closure she had sought for 36 years. The bond formed between her and Sergeant Venosa—who even had a tattoo of Wendy's initials and the handcuffs used in the arrest to honor the victim—highlights the profound impact of persistent investigative work. Wendy Jerome’s story serves as a poignant reminder that even when cases fade from the headlines, justice can prevail through the relentless pursuit of truth and the power of modern forensic science.
