📋 Summary

The Vanishing in Evansdale: A Cold Case Still Seeking Justice

In July 2012, the small, tight-knit community of Evansdale, Iowa, was shattered when two young cousins, 10-year-old Lyric Cook-Morrissey and 8-year-old Elizabeth Collins, vanished while riding their bicycles. Despite an immediate and massive search effort, the girls remained missing for 145 days until their remains were discovered in the remote Seven Bridges Wildlife Area. Over a decade later, the case remains officially unsolved, leaving families and investigators searching for answers.

The Disappearance and Initial Investigation

On Friday, July 13, 2012, the girls failed to return home from a bike ride. Their families, initially assuming they had simply lost track of time playing with friends, quickly transitioned to panic as the hours passed without a sighting. The discovery of their bicycles near Myers Lake, followed by the heartbreaking find of Elizabeth's Hannah Montana purse discarded on a fence, signaled to authorities that this was not a simple accident. The case was soon reclassified as an abduction, triggering a massive multi-agency investigation involving the Evansdale Police, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), and the FBI.

The Shadow of Michael Klunder

As investigators canvassed the area, they encountered a potential link to a separate, chilling case. In 2013, a double abduction occurred in Dayton, Iowa, involving two girls, Kathleen Shepherd and Desi Hughes. The perpetrator, Michael Klunder, was a registered sex offender who had lured the girls with a ruse about mowing a lawn. While Desi miraculously escaped, Kathleen was later found murdered. Klunder, who had a history of violent crimes and abductions dating back to 1986, took his own life shortly after the incident.

Investigators noted that Klunder was intimately familiar with the Seven Bridges area, having hidden there after escaping a juvenile detention center in 1986. Furthermore, he was linked to other rare double abductions in Iowa. Despite these "glaring similarities" and the FBI's profile of a perpetrator who matched Klunder’s MO, officials officially cleared him of the Evansdale case, citing cell phone data that placed him 100 miles away. This conclusion has been met with skepticism by many, including former Chief Dan Trelka, who noted that "phones don't abduct people."

A Search for Truth and Legacy

In the years since, the families of Lyric and Elizabeth have had to navigate the profound grief of losing their children without the closure of a conviction. The investigation saw a brief flicker of new leads in 2016 involving a suspect named Jeff Altmeyer, who was arrested for attempted abductions, but he was eventually ruled out as the girls' killer.

In 2024, renewed interest sparked by a documentary shed light on witnesses who claimed to have seen Klunder in Evansdale during the summer of 2012. Despite this, the case remains cold. Today, the parents of the victims continue to advocate for their children through the Elizabeth Collins Foundation, working to support families of missing persons and educate the public on child safety.

While the Delphi murders in Indiana recently saw a conviction, providing a sense of closure for the families of Abby Williams and Liberty German, the families of Lyric and Elizabeth continue to wait. They remain hopeful that someone, somewhere, holds the final piece of the puzzle that will lead to justice for the two cousins who were taken far too soon.
