📋 Summary

The Legend of the Mountain Spring

"The Mountain Spring," an adaptation of traditional East Asian folktales, tells a moral story about the transformative power of kindness and the consequences of greed. The narrative centers on an elderly couple living in a cozy cottage, characterized by their "kind, loving, and generous" nature. In stark contrast, their neighbor is described as "gruff and grumpy," consistently rejecting the couple's warmth with scowls and dismissive remarks, while hiding his aging body under "shabby sweaters and scarves."

The Discovery of Eternal Youth

The central conflict begins when the old woman, seeking the source of a "magnificent" bird call, discovers a "crystal-clear spring" on the mountainside. Upon taking a sip of the water, which she describes as "sweet as honey," she falls into a deep sleep. When she awakens, she finds herself transformed, her skin "smooth as silk" and her spirit "limber" and "light." She discovers that the spring possesses magical, life-restoring properties, effectively reversing the aging process and returning her to the physical state of her youth.

Greed and Its Consequences

The couple’s neighbor, who has been "peeking through the curtains" to observe their good fortune, becomes consumed by jealousy. Driven by the desire to be "young and beautiful" again, he follows the couple as they return to the spring to rejuvenate the husband. After witnessing the husband transform into a vibrant young man, the neighbor rushes to the spring. Driven by insatiable greed, he consumes an excessive amount of water, "gulping and slurping" until his belly is full.

The Lesson of the Cycle

The neighbor’s excessive consumption leads to an unintended consequence: rather than simply becoming a young man, he regresses beyond youth into infancy. When the couple returns to the clearing, they find a "tiny baby boy" abandoned on the rock, surrounded by the neighbor’s "shabby scarves and sweaters" and his "ratty old woolen cap."

Ultimately, the story concludes with an act of grace. The kind couple chooses to raise the baby as their own. Through their "kind, loving, generous care," the child—who was once the embodiment of a grumpy, isolated neighbor—grows into a kind boy, breaking the cycle of bitterness. The tale serves as a poignant reminder that while the spring offered physical rejuvenation, it was the couple's inherent character that provided the true transformation, turning a life of isolation into one of love and connection.
