📋 Summary

The Mountain Guardian: Understanding the Balance of Need

In the latest episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear narrates a profound Tibetan-inspired folktale titled "The Mountain Guardian." The story serves as an allegory for the importance of moderation, respect for nature, and the fundamental distinction between what we need to survive and what we want out of greed.

The Humble Shepherdess and the Sacred Mountain

The story follows a young shepherdess living in a "ramshackle hut" with her grandmother. After a brutal winter leads to the loss of her entire flock—her only source of livelihood—she seeks help from her wealthy uncle in the city. The uncle, living in a "palatial mansion" surrounded by "butlers and maids," dismisses her, claiming he is not responsible for her plight.

Upon returning to the valley, the shepherdess notices the forest floor is covered with "sturdy boughs" knocked down by winter storms. Recalling her grandmother’s teachings that every mountain has a "powerful spirit" or "protector" and that everything on the mountain is "sacred," she decides to harvest only the fallen wood. By taking only what she needs, she shows respect for the guardian, and in return, the Mountain Guardian—a stone lion that comes to life—rewards her with gold coins for her "care and compassion."

The Failure of Greed

When the uncle hears of his niece’s sudden prosperity, he is consumed by jealousy. Unlike the shepherdess, who understood the sacred nature of the mountain, the uncle approaches the forest with a "sturdy axe," cutting down healthy, living trees to maximize his harvest. When he encounters the Mountain Guardian, he demands a reward, showing no remorse for destroying the mountain’s resources.

The lion, observing the uncle’s avarice, warns him to stop the basket when it is full. However, driven by greed, the uncle fails to stop. As a result, the coins transform into "nuggets of rock," and the lion traps the uncle’s hand in its stone jaws. It is only when the uncle suffers through a long, exhausting ordeal and offers a "heartfelt apology" for his attempt to "deceive" the guardian that he is released. He flees the mountain, having learned a harsh lesson about the consequences of his actions.

Conclusion: Needs vs. Wants

The episode concludes by prompting listeners to reflect on the difference between a "need" (essentials like food, water, and shelter) and a "want" (non-essential items). The shepherdess prospered because she acted with integrity and only took what was necessary, while the uncle’s downfall was a direct result of his inability to distinguish between the two. By respecting the environment and practicing restraint, one finds true abundance; by chasing insatiable desires, one risks losing everything.
