📋 Summary

Overcoming the Reading Slump: A Literary Journey

After experiencing a significant reading slump at the start of the year, the creator shares a revitalized passion for books, successfully breaking through the stagnation to embrace a consistent reading habit. This vlog documents the experience of diving into three distinct genres: dystopian fiction, suspenseful thrillers, and contemporary YA romance.

Returning to the World of Panem: Sunrise on the Reaping

The journey began with Suzanne Collins’ highly anticipated release, Sunrise on the Reaping. The creator highlights Collins’ unique ability to "immerse you in the story" while providing "brilliant commentary and critique." Having spent time in the Hunger Games universe, the reader found the experience "heartbreaking" yet deeply engaging, particularly because the narrative follows Haymitch, a character whose ultimate fate is already known to fans. Despite the temptation to compare the book with others' opinions online—which the creator notes can lead to "gaslighting" oneself—the decision was made to trust the personal experience. The book earned a rare five-star rating, described as a "perfect book" that left the reader wishing they could "erase my memory and read it all over again."

The Thriller Era: Middle of the Night

To maintain momentum, the creator transitioned into a "thriller era," finding these books to be excellent "palette cleansers" due to their fast-paced nature. Riley Sager’s Middle of the Night was the chosen title, a story centered on a character named Ethan who returns to his childhood neighborhood decades after his friend Billy disappeared from a slashed tent. The creator praises Sager’s technique of weaving "multiple timelines together," utilizing a mix of first-person perspectives and omniscient third-person flashbacks. While some readers criticized the lack of a "major plot twist," the creator felt the ending was "perfect" and tied everything together well, ultimately awarding the book 4.25 stars.

Second Chances and Growth: Nothing Like the Movies

The final leg of the vlog moved into the lighthearted territory of YA romance with Nothing Like the Movies, a sequel to Better Than the Movies. This "second chance romance" follows the protagonists, Wes and Liz, as they navigate the transition from high school to college. The creator particularly appreciated the realistic character development, noting that seeing them "grapple with more mature things" felt entirely natural. While the book is on the longer side for the genre—clocking in at 442 pages—and occasionally felt like it revisited the "same issues" in different scenes, the "banter" kept the experience engaging. The reader concluded the session with a solid four-star rating, celebrating the joy of the narrative journey.

Conclusion

This reading vlog serves as a testament to the power of finding the right books to pull oneself out of a slump. By embracing different genres—from the emotional weight of dystopian fiction to the fast-paced intrigue of thrillers and the character-driven growth in romance—the creator successfully reignited a love for reading and looks forward to a summer filled with more literary exploration.
