📋 Summary

The Life and Legacy of Makeva Jenkins

Makeva Jenkins was a 33-year-old entrepreneur, author, and mother of three whose story was one of resilience. Rising from the challenging circumstances of Belle Glade, Florida—an area often struggling below the poverty line—Makeva beat the odds to achieve financial success. She became an "inspiration" to thousands of followers on social media, where she candidly shared her journey from homelessness in 2014 to earning "multiple six digits." Her commitment to empowering others, particularly women, made her a beloved community figure. As prosecutors Adrian Ellis and Alexia Cox noted, she was someone who "genuinely cared about people," and her murder was a devastating loss to the Palm Beach County community.

A Chaotic Crime Scene and Inconsistent Accounts

On the early morning of June 29, 2017, tragedy struck when an intruder entered Makeva's home. According to the accounts of her husband, Yuri Jenkins, and brother, Marquavius (Quay), a masked gunman forced them into the garage and then upstairs to the bedroom where Makeva was sleeping. Despite the presence of three men—Yuri, Quay, and their friend Dimitri Dale—the intruder was able to execute Makeva with a single gunshot wound to the head and flee the scene.

Investigators were immediately troubled by the lack of physical evidence; there was no forced entry, no fingerprints, no shell casing, and no projectile recovered. More suspiciously, the home was not ransacked. High-value items, including jewelry and electronics, were left untouched. As prosecutor Alexia Cox observed, "It’s clear that the objective of the intruder was not money. This was a targeted murder."

Red Flags and Suspicious Behavior

The investigation deepened as prosecutors and detectives scrutinized the behavior of the men present that night. Prosecutors Ellis and Cox found it baffling that none of the three men attempted to disarm the intruder, even when the gunman allowed Dimitri Dale to take a child downstairs. Furthermore, Yuri Jenkins reportedly had his phone on his hip but failed to call 911 while being left momentarily alone in the upstairs loft.

Public suspicion mirrored that of the professionals, with the community questioning how such a targeted killing could occur without resistance. The initial narrative provided by the witnesses—that the intruder was looking for Makeva’s mother, "Quest"—was quickly dismissed as implausible due to the distance of 50 miles between the mother's home and the crime scene.

The Investigation Unfolds: Uncovering Deception

The case took a turn when investigators recovered Dimitri Dale’s white Dodge Charger. Surveillance footage from a fast-food drive-thru led detectives to a man named Jovan Joseph. When confronted, Dale initially failed to mention that Joseph had been at the house on the day of the murder, claiming he was just a friend who needed a haircut.

Joseph’s alibi—that he was at a hospital visiting a sick girlfriend—fell apart when CCTV footage showed he did not arrive until 4:00 AM, two hours after the murder. As the hosts of Anatomy of Murder put it, this was a "mic drop" moment that shifted the investigation toward the possibility of a conspiracy. The lack of theft and the presence of these individuals in the home strongly suggested that this was an "inside job," leading investigators to search for the true motive behind the cold-blooded execution of a woman who was on the "cusp of achieving all her goals."
