📋 Summary

The Path to Santa Barbara

In 1957, Olga Nedikopensik, a dedicated 29-year-old surgical nurse from Benito, Manitoba, moved to Santa Barbara, California, to pursue her dream career at Cottage Hospital. Described as "competent and conscientious" by her colleagues, Olga was a vibrant woman who quickly integrated into her new life. Her trajectory changed permanently on November 7, 1957, when she met Frank Duncan, a local attorney who had brought his mother, Elizabeth "Betty" Duncan, to the hospital following a suicide attempt via sleeping pills. Despite their different backgrounds, Olga and Frank fell in love, eventually marrying in June 1958.

The Shadow of Betty Duncan

The marriage was immediately strained by Betty Duncan’s extreme possessiveness. Betty, who had married and divorced 11 times, viewed Olga as a "foreigner" who had "trapped" her son. She demanded constant attention from Frank, frequently calling to insult Olga and sow discord. The tension escalated when Olga became pregnant. Betty’s hostility was so profound that she even suggested Frank was not the father. The pressure took a toll on the couple, leading to an annulment just two months after their wedding. However, Olga and Frank continued to see each other, with Olga hoping Frank would eventually be a part of their child's life.

A Deadly Conspiracy

Betty’s hatred manifested in a cold-blooded plot. After illegally obtaining an annulment by impersonating the couple at the Ventura Courthouse, Betty decided that the only way to reclaim her son was to eliminate Olga. She approached multiple individuals before finding Luis Moya and Agustin Baldonado, two small-time criminals, who agreed to murder Olga for $6,000. In a cunning twist, Betty attempted to frame the killers as extortionists who were threatening her over legal fees Frank had charged, hoping to kill two birds with one stone: get rid of her daughter-in-law and clear her own name regarding the "extortion" scheme.

The Night of the Kidnapping

On the night of November 17, 1958, Olga was at her apartment on Garden Street when she received a knock at the door. Her visitor lured her out under the pretense that Frank was in trouble and needed her help. Once outside, she was kidnapped by Moya and Baldonado. The struggle was brutal; after being pistol-whipped, Olga was driven to a remote area near Casitas Pass Road. The medical examiner later revealed the horrific truth: after being beaten and strangled, Olga was buried in a shallow grave while still alive, ultimately dying from the inhalation of dirt and gravel.

Justice and Execution

Following the discovery of Olga’s body on December 21, 1958, the investigation unraveled quickly. Detective Charles Thompson, acting on information from Betty’s friend Emma Short, exposed the forgery and the murder plot. All three conspirators—Betty, Moya, and Baldonado—were convicted of conspiracy to commit murder. In a landmark case for the state of California, the two hitmen were executed in the gas chamber at San Quentin in August 1962. The following day, Betty Duncan was executed as well, becoming the last woman to ever face the death penalty in California. Her final words, "Where's Frank?", served as a haunting testament to her lifelong, destructive obsession with her son.
