Greetings, greetings, it's Ksunga here from Radio Headspace.
Today I'm going to share a story about a recent trip to Padua, Italy.
It's a place filled with history and peace.
This experience reminded me of the importance of slowing down and truly being present.
So take a few deep breaths and let's explore this journey together.
Headspace. Greetings, greetings, everyone.
It's Ksunga here and welcome to Radio Headspace.
It's Tuesday and I hope that you're all doing well and feeling grounded.
So for today I want to talk about mindfulness, meditation, and travel.
It's a subject that I really hold dear to my heart because I love to travel and I love mindfulness and meditation, so it's a win -win.
Today I want to take you on a little journey with me.
A journey to a place that's filled with history, art, and a sense of peace that you can almost feel in the air.
I'm talking about Padua, Italy.
One of the perks of being an academic is the epic places that conferences are sometimes held.
My wife is the quintessential academic and this past summer she happened to have a conference in Padua.
Italy was on the places to visit list and so we decided to all tag along.
Now Padua might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of Italy.
Most people think of Rome, Florence, or Venice, but Padua is a hidden gem in Italy.
When we first arrived in Padua what struck me was the sense of timelessness.
Walking through the cobblestone streets you can feel the layers of history beneath your feet.
Every corner you turn seems to reveal a new discovery, a charming piazza, a beautiful church, or a quiet garden.
It's a city that encourages you to slow down, to take your time, and to really be present with your surroundings.
One of the places that really captured my heart was the Scroveni Chapel.
This chapel is home to one of the most incredible works of art that I've ever seen, Giotto's frescoes.
As I stood there, surrounded by these vibrant detailed paintings, I couldn't help but to feel a deep sense of awe.
The colors, the expressions, the stories that they told, it was like stepping into another world.
But what made the experience even more powerful was practicing mindfulness as I took it all in.
Instead of just looking at the frescoes, I really allowed myself to be present with them.
I noticed the way that the light played off the colors, the way each brush stroke seemed to tell a part of a story.
I also noticed my own reactions, the way my heart was racing at times, and the way my breath slowed down as I became more and more immersed in the moment.
And seeing how my family reacted to the beauty made the experience even more enthralling.
This is the beauty of mindfulness when you're traveling.
It's so easy to rush from one place to the next, trying to see everything, trying to check off all the boxes.
But when you practice mindfulness, you give yourself permission to slow down, to really experience the place that you're in.
You start to notice the little details, like the way the sun feels on your skin, the sounds of the city, the smell of fresh bread from a nearby bakery, or the taste of the most delicious gelato I've ever had.
You become fully engaged with your surroundings, and in doing so, you create deeper, more meaningful memories.
Meditation too can be incredibly powerful when you're traveling.
It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of exploring a new place, but it's just as important to find moments of stillness.
Whether it's sitting on a quiet park, finding a peaceful spot by the river, or even just taking a few minutes in your hotel room first thing in the morning on the side of your bed.
Meditation allows you to center yourself amidst the excitement and the new experiences.
For me, meditating in Padua was a way to connect with the city on a deeper level.
When we visited Orto Botanico, which is the oldest botanical garden in the world, I found a quiet spot and just sat in silence for just a few moments.
I focused on my breath, on the sounds of the birds, on the rustling of the leaves and the wind.
In that moment, I felt a profound sense of peace and connection.
Not just with the garden, but with the city itself.
So if you find yourself in Padua, or anywhere else for that matter, I encourage you to take the time to explore mindfully.
Let yourself be fully present with the sights, the sounds, and the sensations around you.
And don't forget to carve out moments for meditation to find that inner stillness even in the midst of a brand new and exciting place.
All right, thank you for joining me on this journey today.
And please check out the meditation in the app called Being in the Moment.
