Close your eyes and imagine standing outside early in the morning, right now, as spring is arriving, the air feels fresh and the sky is slowly turning pink and gold.
Suddenly you hear a sound overhead honking calls echoing across the sky.
You look up and see a long V-shaped line of birds flying together, moving steadily north.
They are not lost.
They know exactly where they are going.
All around the world at this time of year, animals are on the move.
This great movement is called migration, and it is one of the most amazing stories in nature.
Migration happens when animals travel long distances during certain seasons of the year.
Many animals migrate in spring and fall, usually searching for food, warmer weather or safe places to raise their young.
Spring is a busy migration season because animals are returning to places where conditions are perfect for new life.
Longer days, warmer temperatures and growing plants create the right environment for babies to survive.
One of the most famous migrating animals is the bird.
Millions of birds travel every year between winter and summer homes.
Some birds fly only a few hundred miles, while others travel thousands.
The Arctic tern holds one of the longest migration records.
This small bird flies from the Arctic all the way to Antarctica and back again each year, traveling more than 40000 miles.
That is like flying around the Earth nearly twice.
You might wonder how birds know where to go.
Scientists have discovered that birds use several amazing navigation tools.
Many birds follow the position of the sun during the day and the stars at night.
Others can sense Earth's magnetic field, almost like having a built-in compass.
They also recognize landmarks such as rivers, coastlines and mountains.
Birds often migrate in groups for safety and efficiency.
Flying in a V shape helps save energy.
The bird at the front breaks the air resistance, making it easier for birds behind to fly.
They take turns leading, so no single bird becomes too tired.
This teamwork helps them travel incredible distances.
Butterflies also migrate, even though they are much smaller.
Monarch butterflies are famous for their long journeys across North America.
Every fall, millions of monarchs travel thousands of miles to forests in Mexico, where they spend the winter.
In spring, new generations begin flying north again.
Amazingly, no single butterfly makes the entire round trip.

Whales are another incredible example of migration.
Gray whales travel along the Pacific coast between cold northern feeding waters and warm southern breeding areas.
In summer, they eat large amounts of tiny sea creatures in colder oceans.
In winter, they swim to warmer waters where baby whales can be born safely.
Some whale migrations cover more than 10,000 miles each year.
Caribou, large deer-like animals of the Arctic, also make some of the longest land migrations.
Huge herds travel across tundra landscapes searching for fresh plants.
In spring they move toward areas where food is growing and where calves can be born, with fewer predators nearby.
These journeys require crossing rivers, mountains, and wide open plains.
Even fish migrate.
Salmon are famous for traveling from the ocean back to the exact rivers where they were born.
Scientists believe salmon use their sense of smell to recognize the water of their home stream.
They swim upstream against strong currents, sometimes leaping over rocks and waterfalls, to reach their destination.
Sea turtles also travel enormous distances.
After hatching on a beach, Young turtles swim out into the ocean and may travel thousands of miles over many years.
When they become adults, females return to the very same beach where they were born to lay their own eggs.
Scientists think turtles use Earth's magnetic field to help guide them.
Migration is closely connected to Earth's seasons.
As spring arrives, sunlight increases and plants begin growing again.
Insects appear, providing food for birds and other animals.
Animals time their journeys carefully, so they arrive when food is most plentiful.
If they arrive too early, it may still be cold, too late, and food might already be scarce.
Weather plays a big role in migration.
