📋 Summary

The Origins of a Super App

Meituan, often described as a "super app," is a complex digital ecosystem that has become the third-largest technology company in China, trailing only Tencent and Alibaba. Founded by Wang Xing, a serial entrepreneur who previously launched clones of Facebook (Renren) and Twitter (Fanfou), Meituan began as a "Groupon clone." During the period known as the "thousand Groupon war," where thousands of startups competed to offer discount coupons, Meituan survived by focusing on mobile adoption and expanding into Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, rather than just the elite coastal hubs.

The Strategic Merger: Meituan-Dianping

The company’s trajectory changed fundamentally with its merger with Dianping, China’s equivalent of Yelp. While Meituan was built on a "militaristic" sales culture, Dianping was a genuine innovator founded in 2003. Dianping provided a "linchpin" asset: a massive, curated database of restaurant reviews and consumer preferences. By merging, the companies created a powerhouse that combined Meituan’s operational might with Dianping’s high-margin, data-rich review platform. This consolidation effectively allowed them to dominate the food delivery and local services market.

The War of Titans: Tencent vs. Alibaba

The battle for dominance in China's local services sector became a proxy war between tech giants Tencent and Alibaba. While Alibaba initially backed Meituan, they eventually sold their stake after the merger with Dianping, which brought Tencent (a major stakeholder in Dianping) into the fold. Alibaba subsequently shifted its support to Ele.me (Ulema), a rival food delivery platform. This led to a fierce "fight to the death" in the streets, with delivery couriers from rival companies occasionally clashing. Ultimately, Meituan-Dianping emerged victorious, securing nearly 70% of the market share, while Alibaba eventually acquired Ele.me in one of the largest tech acquisitions in Chinese history.

The Power of the Super App Flywheel

Meituan’s success is rooted in its ability to amortize customer acquisition costs (CAC) across an ever-expanding array of services. Unlike Western counterparts such as DoorDash or Uber, which often struggle with high churn and narrow margins, Meituan leverages its "super app" status to cross-sell. Users visit the app not just for food, but for travel bookings, movie tickets, hotel reservations, and even grocery shopping.

Key to this is the "flywheel" effect:

  • Scale Economies: By owning the primary destination for local services, Meituan can invest billions into new initiatives like "community group buying" because they already have hundreds of millions of active users.
  • Data Moat: The Dianping review database acts as a powerful "cornered resource," providing granular data that allows for superior AI-driven recommendations.
  • Advertising Revenue: Similar to Amazon, Meituan has layered on high-margin advertising services, allowing them to capture additional value from the millions of merchants on their platform.

The Future and Risks

As of 2021, Meituan has achieved massive profitability, generating billions in operating cash flow. However, the company faces ongoing challenges, including its dependency on the Tencent ecosystem (which provides traffic via WeChat mini-programs) and the constant need to defend its territory against rivals like Pinduoduo in the grocery and community group buying space.

Ultimately, Meituan represents a shift in global tech innovation. While it began by "copying" Western models, it has since leapfrogged them. The integration of reviews, reservations, delivery, and payments into a single, seamless experience offers a consumer utility that is currently unmatched by the fragmented app landscapes of the West.
