Today as we wrap up our series on building your meditation practice, I wanted to explore something we often don't talk about.
What happens when we take our practice off the cushion and into the real world?
Let me take you back to a moment that shifted everything for me.
I was on a seven day retreat a few years ago, and towards the end of the retreats, here's the truth.
Whether we realize it or not, life is already the practice.
Every moment is an opportunity to be present, to notice, and to reconnect.
The question isn't if we can bring mindfulness into our lives.
It's whether we're willing to notice what's already here.
We often reserve mindfulness for our meditation practice, but as soon as we open our eyes, we tell you, you live in LA.
You know that the traffic here isn't just an inconvenience.
it's practically a rite of passage.
My weekly adventures on the 10 or the 405 have become the ultimate testing ground for my mindfulness practice.
When I first moved to LA, I approached my commute on autopilot.
Every honk, sudden lane change, or distracted driver on their phone would trigger frustration.
My body would tense, my chest would tighten, and irritation would spill over into the rest of my day.
it felt impossible to shake like carrying an invisible weight.
One moment, as I listened to a podcast on my commute, I heard Sharon Salzberg say something along the lines of, you are also the traffic for someone else.
And oof that one hit home.
That compassionate reminder softened something in me.
I decided one morning to approach my drive differently.
Not to change traffic itself, but to change how I related to it.
I began noticing my surroundings with more curiosity and paying attention to how my body responded.
Instead of fueling my frustration with a running commentary, I practiced simply observing without judgment.
Now it didn't make traffic enjoyable, but it did make it manageable.
I stopped carrying the frustration with me when I arrived to my destination.
What surprised me most was how freeing it felt to let go of the narrative I was creating and just be present with what was happening.
And this is a reminder that mindfulness can be practiced anywhere, even in the most unexpected places.
Poet Rumi reminds us, don't go off -site seeing, the real journey is right here.
You are the world. You have everything you need.
And these words carry a quiet, yet profound wisdom.
The reminder that everything we see, calm, clarity, and connection, are not somewhere far off or hidden, but right here in the moments that we tend to overlook.
While seated, silent meditation is deeply transformative, the real growth happens when we take what we've cultivated on the cushion, and bring it into the fabric of our everyday lives.
The moments where life feel messy or mundane—traffic jams, tense conversations, waiting in line, or even savoring a cup of coffee— are the true proving grounds for mindfulness.
These are the spaces where the heart of our practice comes alive.
And if this idea feels abstract in any way, let's start with something simple.
Choose one habitual activity in your day.
Maybe something that you often rush to do without much thought.
And bring your full attention to it.
Take eating breakfast, for example.
Instead of scrolling through your phone or letting your mind wander, pause.
Look at your food with curiosity.
Notice its colors, textures and shapes.
Breathe in its aroma.
As you take a bite, pay attention to how it feels in your mouth, how the flavors unfold, and how it nourishes you.
Choo slowly, savoring the experience, and notice how the small act of presence transforms the ordinary into something vivid—maybe even sacred.
Practicing in this way doesn't demand extra time or special conditions.
It simply asks us to be here, awake to the life that we're already living.
And the beauty is that if you forget or get distracted, that's okay.
Life is full of fresh opportunities to return to the present, to begin again, and to deepen your connection with yourself and the world around you.
So for today, I invite you to explore this practice.
Start small. Be curious.
And see what shifts.
Let me know how it feels, and I'll meet you back here tomorrow to continue this journey.
