📋 Summary

The Yasutake Family’s Descent into Isolation

The story centers on the Yasutake family living in a quiet English village, whose lives were dictated by the rigid, reclusive demands of the youngest sister, Rina. Once a brilliant student at the University of Cambridge, Rina returned home following a mental breakdown, eventually transforming into a recluse who remained confined to her bedroom for decades. She enforced extreme rules, including the removal of all communication devices, the installation of four deadbolts on the house, and the creation of a private, coded dialect. Her siblings, Yoshika—a former world-class pianist—and Takahiro, sacrificed their own careers and personal lives to serve Rina’s mysterious, vague "masterwork."

The Fatal Misconception of the "Masterwork"

As Rina’s behavior became increasingly erratic, she stopped eating, claiming that her "visionary soul" was sufficient for nourishment. This belief led to a tragic misunderstanding within the family. In August 2018, Takahiro discovered Rina unresponsive in her room. Instead of seeking medical help, the family fell into a state of deep psychological delusion. Takahiro, believing Rina was merely in a state of spiritual transition requiring external support, convinced Yoshika that Rina was ready to "reconcile" with her. In reality, Rina had passed away around August 18th, 2018.

A Macabre Ritual of Mummification

For the following six weeks, the family engaged in a horrific, misguided ritual. Believing they were supporting Rina’s creative process, Yoshika and Takahiro purchased vast quantities of "surgical spirits" (medical alcohol) to rub onto Rina’s body. They believed these applications were essential to nourish her soul as she completed her masterpiece. During this time, Yoshika would sit outside the bedroom door, pouring her heart out to her deceased sister and even playing the piano to show her affection, unaware that she was speaking to a corpse. The alcohol, rather than acting as a spiritual aid, served to mummify Rina’s body.

The Discovery and Legal Aftermath

The charade collapsed in late September 2018 when a local pharmacist, alarmed by the overwhelming stench emanating from the siblings and their frequent, suspicious purchases of surgical spirits, alerted the police. Upon entering the home, authorities discovered Rina’s mummified remains. The family was initially charged with preventing a proper and decent burial, but the court eventually dropped the charges, concluding that the entire family was suffering from severe mental illness. They were unable to process the reality of Rina's death, firmly believing that their efforts had kept her alive and productive. The case remains a haunting example of how collective delusion and extreme isolation can lead to tragic, incomprehensible outcomes.
