I've been doing this kind of whistle with my hands ever since I was a child.
And to be honest, I don't know much about it or where it comes from.
I just know that I love the sound of it and the incredible echoes it creates on a quiet evening in the forest.
I was about 9 years old when I read an article in a child's magazine where they had an interview with people living high up in the mountains and where they used this kind of whistling as a way of communicating between the villages.
I can't remember what country it was.
But I thought it was so fascinating and just from reading the text over and over again and watching the pictures of the people doing the whistle, I figured out how to learn it myself.
And I can really understand why it's been used as a way of communicating.
Because, with the right weather conditions, this sound can travel over very far distances.
So In Swedish I call this vildvissla, which means wild whistling, because it's something I often do when I'm out in nature.
And the sound somehow feels wild and remind me of different birds.
Hi everyone and welcome to this beautiful September evening in the middle of the forest.
One of my most requested videos from you guys who watch my YouTube channel is a tutorial on how I do the whistling with my hands that you can see me doing in a lot of the videos that I share.
And to all of you out there who wants to learn how to do this whistling with your hands, you are at the very right place, because in this video, I will share everything I know about this hand whistling and I will guide you step by step on this very simple technique, actually on how you can learn to do it yourself.
Now it's your turn to do it.
And, as I said, it's a very simple technique but, as always when you're learning something new, it's gonna take some practice.
For some of you, you're gonna be able to do a sound immediately, and for some of you it's gonna take a little bit longer.
But the bass sound is very simple.
So all you need is your hands and I'm gonna try to show you the best I can on this video.
I'm also gonna do some close-up footage so you can see more clearly on how I do it.
But all you do is that you take your hands and you put them together like this.
I hope you can see.
Just like this.
So you are going to create like.
So you're going to create like a little hollow space inside your hands, like a little room, and that's very important because that's how the sound is gonna be made.
So you should not do like this.
You need to make this nice hollow space inside your hands and I hope it's focused, and then you're going to keep your thumbs beside each other, like this, if you see, and you're going to keep them a little bit open, because this is where you're gonna blow in the air And you blow on the joints of the thumbs, which is here on these knuckles, or how to say.
And you don't want to cover the whole hole.
English, oh my gosh.
You want to blow on the joints, but leave a little room underneath, because what you do is that you blow in the air in this hollow space in the hands and then it comes out again and that's what creates the sound.
So you need to leave some room open down underneath.
So, when you blow in air now, it's going to sound like this.
That's the bass sound.
That's the deepest sound that you can make.
And it's the easiest sound to make.
So make sure you make the air come out underneath.
So don't cover the hole like this.
If this is the first time you're doing this, it might just sound like this in the beginning.
Just keep practicing and remember to make as much space as you can in the hand, because that's gonna make a more clear sound.
Then, when you have learned to do the bass sound, then you can start to play around with making other tones, like lighter tones.
And that's when you kind of can create these beautiful sounds, which also becomes even louder.
I have to go further away from the camera to show you this so it doesn't get too loud.
So I bet you want to learn how to do those notes when you can go up.
And the technique is also very simple, but it might take some practice before you can get a smooth sound to all the different tones that you can do.
But all you do to make higher tones is that you open up this hand.
This is my left hand.
So you open it up like this, so it becomes like a hole in the back, and the more you open up like this, the higher the tone.
So while you practice, it's going to take some time before you can reach the highest tones, because they are the most hard to reach.
So in the beginning you might be able to do like something like that and then the more you practice you're gonna be able to to make it sound more clear and smooth without this airy sound to it.
So it's nothing more advanced than this.
All you need is like the base tone and to open up the hand like this.
Now it's getting dark here as you can see.
I hope you found this video to be helpful and inspiring.
