It triggers the habenula (the "disappointment nucleus"), which can suppress dopamine, inhibit learning, and contribute to mood disorders. Keep evening lighting dim and low to the ground to avoid activating these circadian-sensitive neurons.

Tools for Better Rest and Recovery

When we struggle to fall asleep, attempting to "control the mind with the mind" often leads to frustration. Instead, we should use the body to regulate the brain.

  • NSDR (Non-Sleep Deep Rest): Practices like Yoga Nidra and meditation are powerful tools to shift the nervous system from a sympathetic (alert) state to a parasympathetic (calm) state. These protocols can reset cognitive energy levels and help one disengage from the "OCD loops" of ruminative thinking.
  • Strategic Supplementation: If behavioral changes are insufficient, certain supplements may assist, though they should be explored carefully with a healthcare professional.
    • Magnesium Threonate: May help increase GABA, promoting relaxation.
    • Theanine: Can assist in "turning off" the mind, though it may cause vivid dreams.
