In this episode of the Disney Magic of Storytelling podcast, ABC 11 news anchor John Clark narrates the thrilling tale of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace – Race to the Finish Line. This story captures the journey of young Anakin Skywalker, a boy living on the remote planet of Tatooine with dreams of "racing across the stars."
Anakin’s ordinary life takes a turn when he meets a Jedi Knight named Qui-Gon, who requires essential supplies to repair his ship. Lacking the funds to assist, Anakin decides to enter a high-stakes pod race. While Anakin is confident in his abilities, he recognizes a significant threat: Sebulba. Anakin knows that "Sebulba cheated to win," establishing the antagonist as a dangerous and dishonest competitor who poses a direct threat to the safety of all other racers.
At the start of the race, disaster strikes when Anakin’s pod racer fails to move. As panic sets in, Anakin recalls the vital advice provided by Qui-Gon: "Concentrate on the moment. Feel. Don't think. Use your instincts." By following this guidance, Anakin manages to restart his engine and rejoin the race. This moment is pivotal, as it teaches the young protagonist to overcome his initial panic and focus on his connection to the machine and his surroundings.
As the race progresses, the environment becomes as deadly as the competitors. Anakin witnesses the brutal nature of the competition as other racers are eliminated; one racer crashes in a "burst into flames" after a collision with Sebulba, and another hits rocks within a "deep cave." Despite these dangers, Anakin remains focused. Even when a piece of debris from an explosion cuts a cable connecting his cockpit to an engine, causing him to "spin out of control," Anakin demonstrates remarkable mechanical skill and composure. He manages to grab the loose cable, reattach it, and return to the race, proving his resilience under pressure.
In the final stages, the rivalry between Anakin and Sebulba reaches a breaking point. Sebulba attempts to force Anakin off the course, but Anakin’s determination to not "be beaten" leads him to crash back onto the track right in front of his rival. When his engine begins to smoke and catch fire, Anakin displays quick thinking by closing a flap to "put out the fire" and pumping coolant into the overheated area.
The climax occurs as the stadium approaches. Anakin realizes he must neutralize Sebulba’s aggressive tactics. When Sebulba tries to ram him again, Anakin executes a brilliant maneuver: he catches his podracer on Sebulba’s, and as Sebulba attempts to pull away, Anakin unhooks his craft. This causes Sebulba to zoom "wildly off course" and crash, allowing Anakin to use "Sebulba’s own attack against him."
Anakin crosses the finish line to the roar of the crowd, with Qui-Gon lifting him high on his shoulders. By winning the race, Anakin achieves what "seemed impossible," turning his dream of adventure into a reality. The story concludes on a hopeful note, with Anakin wondering about the "great adventure" that awaits him next. Through this narrative, the audience is reminded of the importance of focus, instinct, and integrity in the face of daunting challenges.
