Discussion keeps the worldturning.
This is RoundTable. They may not have the most glamorous jobs with the most rewardingpay.
Often they show up in dial clothes or are slow to share their opinions or even refrain from responding to words of criticism oracrimony.
There are the opposite of alpha males who command a strong presence in theroom.
But they are just as good at professinglove, perhaps better at showing compassion and offering emotional support and they've come to the spotlight in TV series thesedays.
Hello, I'm Limeing and this is RoundTable.
Today with New Holding and BradenYees, we look at the rising popularity of the so-called lovablelosers.
This is quite an oxymoron because in my opinion whoever is being loved is not aloser.
He's alreadywon. He's alreadywon.
Trying to get into therole, getting to thepart.
So what are the characteristics of these so-called lovablelosers?
I'mnot. They're darkclothes.
Well, I don't call them lovablelosers.
Lettisons. You've painted a good picturethough.
I would call them husband materials and maybe not even in reallife, but more in entertainmentshows, in TV shows andmovies.
The kind of male stars on screen that you take a look at and youthink, huh, he's not unbelievably handsome orsomething, but I think he's good husbandmaterial.
And he'srelatable. And I also think that movie goers and viewers of TV series or movies also generally favorunderdogs.
So I don't know if you're familiar with theterm.
Underdogs are basically people that you don't expect tosucceed, but you root for them because they're good people and they're battling against odds and that kind ofthing.
So I think there's a lot of romance films and romance TV series where a lot of women inparticular, as opposed often root for the guy that seems less the least likely to get thegirl, youknow, like thenice, new guy opposed to like the super goodlooking, youknow, guy that messes around and youknow, does that sort ofthing.
So I think maybe that has made the quoteunquote, lovable loser moreappealing.
It makes goodstory. Imean, the loser strikesback.
The loser gets agirl. No, in myopinion, those people are considered anunarmed.
The second best important male figure in amovie.
The votingrole. They're thesupporters.
Does that mean that like woman are dropping theirstandards?
No, I don't think so because if you take a lookat, see, I about to say lovableloser.
I'm about to saythat, but actually husbandmaterials, these kind of against stars onscreen, these kind of male actors have the certain trait to they give you the kind of feeling that they'restable.
They arereasonable. They are rational and they give you thesupport.
Thelaw, yes, ofcourse, the kind of support that is not enough for you to buy a luxurious back everyweek, but enough for you to support the family and they give you the emotionalsupport, which is also veryimportant.
They also don't bust youaround.
They don't bust youaround.
They don't bust youaround.
They don't bust youaround.
I think those views have changed there because Ithink, youknow, in previous yearswhere, youknow, you had theselike, youknow, alphamale, super good looking maleleads.
I think that appeal has decreased particularly amongst women because I thinkthere's, they've gained the experience thatthose, Imean, we're also generalizinghere.
Those men are kind of perceived to be notloyal, notsupportive, verydemanding.
Youknow, and there's a lot ofnegative, yeah, there's a lotof, so there's a lot of negative traits associated with previous maleleads, Ithink, which I suppose are valid in somepoint, but then I also sort of feelthat, youknow, the emergence of these lovable losers while it is a good thing in terms of being relatable and italso, Ithink, makes a lot of men that watch movies feel a lot more comfortable aboutthemselves.
There is the other side of it in the sense that when I watch films or TVseries, I love to see men that I can aspire to be like or were motivatedby.
So I think that element of male leads might be disappearing and I also think that havingrelatable, lovable loser male leads isimportant, but you also can't get ridof, youknow, the male traits completely that have seemingly become toxic in a lotof, youknow, social media campaigns and that sort ofthing.
So I think it's a balancingact.
So we can't get ridof, youknow, the strong male completely in terms of representation on thescreen, but we also need to see more representation of men that are more relatable in terms of men that woman and men deal with on a day-to-day basis because when you're at theoffice, you don't see a six foot four blonde six pack guy walkingaround, you know what Imean, you see like your averageshow.
And that is a really goodpoint.
Yeah, but so it's a balancingact.
You don't want to get ridof, youknow, these uber malecharacters, but you also can't exclude standard mencompletely.
Yeah. And in themeantime, actually, we have a lot of different types and different labels we are using to describe different types ofmen, but I have tosay, I don't think we're doing that in reallife.
These labels both for male and female are not that it's even embarrassing to use it in real life ifyou're, love oflooser, lovableloser.
But youknow, it's also crazy about reallife.
There's been a lotof, particularly onlinedating.
There's been a lot of stats that have come out recently whereyes, youknow, in terms of finding long term partners and that sort of thing and meeting men in reallife, they does seem to be more of an appeal with regards to personality traits of men as opposed to statusand, youknow, the things that they have in the way that theyare.
But with datingapps, apparently, youknow, obviouslythey're, most of it is purely based on physical because you can't really talk to them until you match withthem.
So it's basically based on pictures and you see like the physique or what car they drive or what job theyhave.
Apparently less than10% of men on dating apps have access to90% of the women on dating apps and the other90% of men are completely excluded from selection onwomen.
So basically women are swiping left on90% of men and only swiping right on10% of men and generally that10% of men is the uber males that we see in informs.
So youknow, like six footfour, muscular, have an amazingjob, have an awesomecar, youknow, and that standard uber malerole.
So it's interesting that the more relatable man is becoming more appealing on screen because then the reality it doesn't seem to be thecase, particularly with online datingapps.
Yeah, online dating apps are a very extreme example in myopinion.
But it's incredibly popular way for young people to meet a perspectivepartner.
But when you're going onthere, you started to have a certain type that you're lookingfor.
You have this ideal male you're lookingfor, but actually in reallife, if you actually fall inlove, then the other person that you love might be completely different to then your so-called idealtype.
So it'snot. But the issue there is that that standard old school way of meeting people is becoming a lot more difficult now because of onlinedating.
And the problem with the growth in popular popularity of online dating is that these men that we talkabout, youknow, the men that you might meet and fall in love with not purely based on what you see the first time you meetthem.
A lot of them are missing out on a huge pool of women because of the way that men are approached on social media on dating apps because the dating apps initially only offer the looks and status ofmen.
So the growth of the popularity of dating apps is kind of creating a problem for your averageJoe.
And you're saying the90% of men who are not gettingdays, they have a lot of time to watch TV and they're calling Hollywood and also TVseries.
Because you need to change yourprofile.
I want to look at characters who are more relatable tome.
Is that the logic you're tryingto...
That concern is just that it does seem like a lot of men are missing out on women that they may be very well suited for because of the way dating apps tend towork.
So that somehow has an impact on the way that TV series producers have in terms of vision for what the society isoperating.
Yeah,no, I think just becauseof, youknow, obviously the way that we see media is it's just us consuming entertainment and it is meant to represent reallife.
And youknow, I don't think we see a lot of what's going on in reality with regards to the growth of modern online dating being represented on thescreen.
So I think what's being represented on the screen is a good thing sothat, youknow, men don't feel that they have to be this alpha male to potentially meet a lifelong partner and women are also seeing the value in men that goes beyond what they haveand, youknow, what they looklike.
But it does seemlike, andlook, online dating is not the only way to meet apartner, but it is becoming increasingly popular all over theworld.
And the problem with that is that the first impression is based on looksentirely.
And when you swipe left onsomeone, you won't have the opportunity to see them again on thatsite.
So the issue there is that a lot of standard men are missing out on a very large pool of women because of how online datingworks.
So going away from the screen and bringing it toreality, I think that's just a concern for the every manIE, the lovable loser that we're seeing onscreen.
Well, to startwith, I think there is definitely a delay between the popular traits and characters on screen and the popular male candidates in reallife.
So this is just becoming20.
And let's give it a little bittime.
Maybe it can be the kind of influence that women out there would take and then startedto, yes, select or wipe right inlove.
Yeah. But like yousaid, but also like you saidearlier, I think inreality, when you meet men that you interact with on a daily basis that you don't necessarily meet on a datingapp, that's where that becomes morerealistic.
Because I think that a lot of that decision making from the women's side ofthings, particularly, is more based on personality and getting along with someone and falling in lovewith, when you meet someone on dating app the first time that you swipe right or swipeleft, the only thing that you have to work with islooks.
Both the scenario portrayed in TV series and also thescenario, specifically in socialmedia, datingapplications, they only represent a small segment of a real life society in a real lifeworld.
Andsuch, I think even in reallife, still90% of the women will get90% of the lovablelosers.
I hopeso. But itjust, it definitely does seem like the traditional way that men meet women isdecreasing.
And I think that's something that needs to beaddressed.
Because if people are shifting more and more to onlinedating, I think that needs tobe, notregulated, but it needs to be looked at in terms of what people can base each other's decision on in terms of if they swipe left or swiperight.
Right. So that we've done a rather thorough social studies behind the changes in the most prevalent character in TVseries.
Anotherperspective, look atthis.
Imean, perhaps because I've done movie reviews and I personally had taken the interest in how TV series and films weredone.
And I might guess thisperhaps, youknow, there's a changefor, maybe there's a demand for people for actors with good acting skills as comparedto, youknow, actors who are reallygood, who can bring in theinvestment, whocan, youknow, command a lot offans.
I think perhaps a few yearsago, there was this practice of bigcompanies, entertainment companies investing into this one idol who can be quite influential on socialmedia.
And then this idol will go on to your star in TV series and films attracting his already huge fan base to whatever medium hegoes, he or she goes to could be a TVseries, could be afilm, could be onlinenovels, whatever, or musicvideos.
But I wonder whether this has changedsomehow.
The entertainment industry has changed to a certain point where viewers are demanding people with good actingskills.
Oh,right. It still happens that people with good actingskills, they arenot, youknow, major charactermaterial.
They're a lovable loser kind ofmaterial.
Imean, but I think that rate hasincreased.
But when I still think of themost, I don't know aboutChina, but when I think about the most globally popular malestars, it isstill, youknow, the, Imean, they're pretty good looking inshape, guys.
But that also equally have excellent actingabilities.
And it seems like just the standard guy that looks good with an amazingbody, that's kind of decreasing a littlebit.
It often was thecase. Imean, if you have being payingattention, it often was the case when you get a veryinfluential, very high profile TV series starring this idol and it's a very goodproduction.
It's goodquality, very good props and backgroundsetting, that kind of thing is goodmusic.
But you always get thatcomplaint.
Oh, this actor doesn't know how toplay.
But all the supporting actors are verygood.
Yeah. Funnyenough, even looking back so manyyears, one of my favorite series is TheSupranos.
And Tony Supranosis, youknow, he's the lead character andhe's, youknow, he'soverweight, he's baldand, youknow, he's notexactly, if you just looked at him very physicallyattractive, but because of the acting abilities that he hasand, youknow, certain character traits and everything likethat, he became incredibly popular within the femaledemographic.
And Imean, this was late90s, early2000s.
So I definitely think there is correlation between really good acting skills and male leads that disconnects the need for a male lead to be this ridiculouslyattractive, youknow, just eyecandy.
I think it goes beyondthat.
I think it's relatively easy for one to identify a goodactor.
We can definitely recognize a goodactor.
We can appreciatethem, but it does not mean we would want them as our screenhusband.
And here's thething, when it comes to good entertainmentworks, definitely there are differenttypes.
Butcurrently, apparently a lot of male stars and male actors out there are getting this label because we can only know them through theirworks.
We can actually talk tothem.
We do not know what they like in reallife, but what we do know or what we can actually digest and get familiar with is theircharacter.
And when they are really good at this specific type ofcharacter, we would assume maybe in reallife, they're a little bit like that aswell.
Maybe calling them my screenhusband, my screen husband who is not that overly confident to arrogant who understands me is a pretty good idea to spend some free timewith.
And Imean, the kind of idol economy that someone who has a huge traffic and can be selected despite their poor actingskills, that's liketwo, three yearsago.
So that's no longer beingsaid, though, whenever a new Marvel movie or whatever comes out featuring four and Captain America and all of these Uber hyper mails at the box office that always pulls in one billiondollars.
And youknow, they always seem to dominate the box officestill.
So even in the Marveluniverse, there's this changechange.
Imean, the guardians of thegalaxy, theactor, the male character certainlyisn't.
As alpha maleas, let'ssay, Superman and TomHolland, the spiderman.
He's also incredibly popular and he's notexactly, youknow, the super malekid.
Yeah, he's akid, Lich and he'stiny.
And the reason that I believe that using thisterm, this lovable loser or husband or material or screenhusband, screenboyfriend, yes, we have both and also screen sons and screendaughters.
It's a bitlimiting,right?
That'strue. But the lovable loser thing because I also think a lot of male characters that are appealing to women like yousaid, it's not necessarily that you view them as husbandmaterial.
You just value their character and also the quality of the writing in theseries.
Yes, which is why I think it's still something that's relatively objective fight or relatively confined to only the entertainmentworld.
We're not actually using these terms to describe people in the reallife.
I think this is a shock for these ideallovable.
No,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no, nono,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no, no And then you've got the type of husbands or dads who areplayful, they're kind to thekids, they talk to thekids, when moms are over strict to thekids, the dad would come out and ease the situation that's basically the second generation and then we've got the alpha male and now we've got these husband material who arestable, rational, reasonable and also good looking in the reasonableway.
In the ownway, yeah, I'm still I'm liking the emergence of all of thesecharacters, but I also hope that like the ubers hyper alpha male that I am nowherenear, but find veryaspirational.
I think those characters don't disappear completely because I love watching like a James Bond or the expendables and youknow, like the rocky films and you know all of theart.
Yeah, die hard like all of those like insanely like manly men that like feel no pain and have no emotions like I'm not likethat, but I love watching those sorts ofmovies.
It's nice to have someidols.
Exactly. You're listening to roundtable, motivation among thesenext.
So my nameis. Welcome back to motivation of Monday this week in your hauling has something special forus, but we will begin withBrandon.
Okay. So mine is from Martin LutherKing, junior, one of the most you know influential figures in Americanhistory.
And he once said out of the mountain ofdespair, a stone ofhope.
So that basically means that no matter what you're dealingwith.
And the matter how much adversity you'refacing, if you somehow manage to maintain just a sliver of hope and positive mentality in any form of difficulttimes, then you could persevere and get through any sort ofsituation, no matter how small that little bit of hopeis.
It can really carry you through some very difficulttimes.
So no matter what you whoever'slistening, if you're dealing with some very troublesome times at the moment or you are facing seemingly impossible adversity and you're struggling to get out of some sort of whole if you just manage to hang on to a little bit of hope that things will turnaround.
I promise you you'll get through whatever you're dealing with is mine over amatter.
Sometimes if you are a materialisticperson, you'll you find it hard tobelieve, but in now line ofbusiness.
Sometimes magic like that work aswell.
If you think about positivethoughts, happythoughts, you always sound a lot more positive and you might you might evenconvey, comport yourself a lot moreconfidently.
And this way perhaps when you're engaging withpeople, you're moreconfident, you get moreopportunities.
Maybe that's the way itworks.
In ourindustry, we're also very good at fakingit.
So I could be having a terribleday, but sound lovely onradio.
And also if it's areally, really, really badday, remember youpersist.
So you havehope, not you persist because you havehope.
So sometimes just trying to hending their would help aswell.
My quote this week is from presumably an Americanauthor, because Craig loansborrow.
Imean, I didn't have enough time to to make sure where he's comefrom.
But you knowAmericans, they like to write books about self-help and motivationalstuff.
And this week I had something hesaid, and that is a label locks me into a definition that people used to controlme.
A vision graces me with an idea that serves to releaseme.
And I gotinspiration. Iwent, I went searching for a quote like this deliberately because I was studying the second topic where men aregiven.
And that kind of labels and that I for one didn't appreciate beinglabeled.
I for one believe that we are a lot more sophisticated than what a label can define youwith.
And therefore it's being my aspiration to live beyond whatever label that this is that the society or anybody else that's imposing onme.
I must behonest, I kind of love my label as the sportsguy.
I'm quite happy with my chosen label at CGT andradio.
Yeah, but I give it you saying I think labels can be verylimiting.
So being able to youknow, kind of forge an idea of yourself and what you want to be in what you cando.
I think it's definitely a goodthing.
Yes, and the reason I said it's something that we actually enjoy as part of our entertainment life is that real life is because I do not believe that anybody that you meet in real life can belabeled.
And then it comes to me to share my motivationalMonday.
Actually, we know Mother's Day is celebrated on May the 12th in manyplaces.
And that is the pastweekend.
And it's a special day dedicated to honoring and appreciating mothers and even mother figuresworldwide.
People often celebrate by givinggifts, writing cards or spending quality time with theirmothers.
Right. And I did thatwith.
What did youdo? I sent gifts to both my mom and my mom inlaw.
Soyeah, it's it's a nice thing todo.
And actually we had some really goodtime.
And I feel that it's it needed to be mentioned and reminded for those of you who might be too busy doing that actuallytoday.
And a special gift from the spouse for being yourmom.
Oh,yeah.Well, my kid is just tooyoung.
My kid cannot celebrate Mother's Day for me in thefuture.
I will be able to enjoy that day aswell.
And in themeantime, what I'm sharing has something to do withthat.
Actually, it's one of the most famous poem intry.
Well, famous poems in China that related tomotherhood.
Right. It's called YozhYin.
It can be translated as son of Wanderer or son of aWanderer.
And actually it is a poem written by Meng Zhao during the TangDynasty.
It's a quite heartfelt expression from a mother to her son who is away fromhome.
And you can roughly translate it as threads in the loving mother's hand clothes on the wandering son'sback.
She sews stitches stitch by stitch before his departure fearing his latereturn.
Who says the heart of grass can repay the sun's springwarmth.
So definitely the sun's spring worms are the metaphor for the mother'slove.
And the little grass are the kids who are growing and thriving because of thesunlight.
And it is a very beautifulpoem.
It has been cited and used in a lot of Chinese people to show their love for theirmothers.
And guesswhat? It's now a realsunt.
Oh,yes, that's the specialthing.
And speaking of Mother's Day and showing love for yourmom, I actually saw our colleague that was just reading the hourlynews.
Tian Lu at the MoliestLane.
She was walking around with her mom held hand inhand, which was reallysweet.
Yeah, it is verysweet. I love seeing things like that on Mother'sDay.
Yes. And actually any day can be Mother'sDay.
You can do that with your mom any day at any time of theyear.
So please dothat. And while you're doingthat, you can also appreciate this sun that our colleagues very talented colleagues created with the help of artificialintelligence.
And this should bring us to the end of theshow.
Thank you for listening and please enjoy thesong.
Mother's Hands workedtirelessly.
We'd in friends oflow-seemlessly.
Stitching memories treasure each and a league out for her child'sjourney.
