The relationship between megafauna and plant evolution is dynamic. The model demonstrated that when large mammals evolved, they effectively "opened up the understory," leading to a decrease in seed size. However, the subsequent extinction of Pleistocene megafauna—such as woolly mammoths and giant sloths—resulted in another shift. Many plants, including avocados and chocolate, were "co-evolved" with these extinct giants, meaning their survival strategies were tethered to animals that no longer exist.
