📋 Summary

Long Hair and the Waterfall: A Legend of Compassion

In this episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear narrates a poignant Chinese folktale titled "Long Hair and the Waterfall." The story serves as a profound allegory for the power of community, the courage required to challenge oppressive forces, and the rewards of selfless acts.

The Plight of the Parched Village

The narrative centers on a woman known as "Long Hair," named for her "glossy, raven-black locks" that reached her ankles. Her village suffers from a devastating drought, forcing residents to "trudge" five exhausting miles to the nearest river, only to watch their gardens "wither" and their families "waste away from hunger." Driven by empathy, Long Hair decides to scale a forbidden, foggy mountain to find a source of water to save her people.

The Discovery and the Spirit's Threat

During her ascent, Long Hair discovers a lush, green plant amidst the "jagged stones." Upon pulling it from the earth, she unearths a giant red radish that was "blocking up a spring." As she clears the obstruction, cool, refreshing water begins to flow. However, her relief is short-lived as the "spirit of the mountain" appears, warning her that the water is his and threatening her with dire consequences should she reveal its location. Despite the spirit's "formidable powers" and the risk to her own safety, Long Hair is moved by the suffering of an elderly neighbor who collapses under the weight of a water pot. Recognizing the village's desperation, she chooses to defy the spirit, declaring, "I know where we can find water."

Sacrifice and Redemption

The villagers successfully tap into the spring, creating a waterfall that sustains the village. However, the mountain spirit exacts his revenge, turning Long Hair's hair "snowy white" and condemning her to "lie on the side of this mountain" forever under the waterfall. Long Hair accepts this fate, prioritizing her neighbors' survival over her own life.

Ultimately, a mysterious elderly woman—whom Long Hair had previously helped—intervenes. Using a statue to deceive the spirit, the woman transfers Long Hair's white hair to the stone carving, allowing the statue to take the "eternal punishment" of the icy water. In a final act of grace, Long Hair’s original raven-black hair is restored, and she is reunited with her father and community, living the rest of her days in peace.

Conclusion: The Legacy of Kindness

The story concludes with a practical lesson on kindness. Just as Long Hair sacrificed her own comfort for her community, the podcast encourages listeners to create a "Kindness Wheel" to identify and perform acts of service for those around them. The episode emphasizes that small, brave actions can create a lasting, positive impact, ensuring that, like the waterfall, the spirit of generosity flows "forever."
