📋 Summary

The Baker's Greasy Clue: A Tale of Justice and Density

In the latest episode of Circle Round, titled "Like Oil and Water," listeners are treated to a clever folktale inspired by traditional stories from China. The narrative centers on a humble baker and an ingenious new judge, demonstrating how wit and scientific principles can triumph over petty theft.

The Theft in the Pine Forest

Our protagonist is a hardworking baker who spends her days selling "flaky tarts, fluffy cakes, and her specialty, sweet fritters" at the bustling city market. Her life is simple and honest until a rainy day forces her to take shelter in a "dense pine forest" on her way home. Exhausted, she hides her hard-earned silver coins beneath her leftover fried fritters, places the basket on a "big, flat rock," and falls asleep. Upon waking, she discovers to her dismay that both her fritters and her coins have vanished, leaving behind only "greasy wax paper" at the bottom of the basket.

The Judge's Unconventional Investigation

Desperate, the baker turns to a new judge known for being "smart as a whip and sharp as a tack." When the baker explains her predicament, the judge devises a plan that initially seems absurd. She orders her attendants to bring the "big, flat rock" from the forest to the courthouse, claiming it is the "only witness" to the crime. This unconventional move attracts a massive crowd of curious onlookers, all eager to see how the judge will handle such a strange request.

The Courtroom Confrontation

Inside the courtroom, the judge treats the rock as a defiant defendant, eventually declaring it in "contempt of court" for its silence. When the crowd begins to laugh at this display, the judge turns the tables, declaring the onlookers themselves in contempt for mocking the law. As punishment, she orders everyone present to pay a fine of five silver coins by dropping them into a large jar filled with water.

Science as the Ultimate Witness

As the crowd lines up to pay, a "stocky man in a blue coat" steps forward to drop his coins into the jar. Suddenly, the judge identifies him as the thief. Her proof? The surface of the water in the jar. Because the baker's coins had been hidden under her deep-fried fritters, they were coated in oil. As the man dropped the coins into the water, a "greasy, filmy layer of oil" floated to the top. The judge explains the scientific principle: "oil is less dense than water, and therefore it will rise up and float."

The revelation exposes the culprit, as the man’s pockets were found to contain the rest of the stolen coins. The story concludes with a moral lesson: in the eyes of a clever judge, deceit and dishonesty "mixed just about as well as oil and water," serving as a permanent deterrent to any future wrongdoers in the city.
