Squiz Kids! It's your daily news fix fun free fresh!
Hello and welcome to Squiz Kids Today your fresh take on what's happening in the world around you.
I'm Christi Kijerina it's Wednesday May 14 in Squiz Kids today the Lib's First Lady, Yorkshire's Puff and Pop -Up, a Capybara's Great Escape and a Sky Show stuns the West. That's what's making news kid style.
The Lowdown. There's a new leader of the Liberal Party and for the first time ever it's a woman.
Her name is Susan Lee and she's just made history by becoming the first female leader of the Federal Liberal Party.
That's one of the two biggest political parties in Australia, so it's a pretty big deal.
Lee moved to Australia at 13 years of age after living in Nigeria, the Middle East and England and she spent her teenage years in Canberra's Punk Rock scene with purple spiky hair, a dog collar necklace and a razor blade as an earring.
Whoa! She dreamed of becoming a pilot and paid for flying lessons by working three jobs.
Then she got her licence at 20 but as a woman in those days struggled to find work.
So she became an Air Traffic Controller instead.
She's now been in Parliament for more than 20 years, representing a big stretch of NSW along the Victorian border called Farrer.
Over the years, she's been in charge of some pretty important portfolios like health, the environment and education.
Now here's something to think about.
Even though women make up around half of the population, Australia has only ever had one female Prime Minister.
And this year is the first time that Labor women will outnumber men in the lower house of parliament.
So this is a big step and hopefully a sign of more to come.
Girls, if you dream of being Prime Minister one day, go for it.
Spin the Globe. Each day we give the worldglobe a spin and find a news story from wherever it lands.
And today we've landed in Yorkshire, England where thousands of puffins are finishing their epic annual migration.
Now, puffins are an adorable sea bird, with black and white feathers, bright orange feet and colourful beaks.
Each year, they fly across the Atlantic Ocean to nest in the cliffs at Bempton, where over 3 ,000 return to the same spot to breed.
These beautiful birds mate for life, meaning that the mums and dads stay together, and lay their eggs in cliff -side burrows year after year.
The chicks are called, wait for it, Pufflings, how cute is that!
The pufflings are fed by both parents for weeks before heading off to sea in the middle of the night guided by the moon.
How romantic! If you'd like to take a look at the wonder that is puffins, there's a link to video in your episode notes.
Animal Kingdom There's a capybara on the run in China, and after more than 40 days on the loose, this adorable escape artist is giving serious Valerie vibes.
Remember our favourite runaway sausage dog?
Capybaras are the world's largest rodents!
Think giant guinea pigs with webbed feet!
They're native to South America, but this one in China has made quite the getaway.
Three capybaras escaped from a zoo in Yangzou City back in April.
And while two were quickly recaptured, one named Doubao, which means bean bundle, is still at large.
The zoo's taken a pretty lighthearted approach, joking that Doubao carries no dangerous weapons and poses no threat to the public.
They've even offered free zoo tickets to anyone who helps to bring him home.
So, Dobaou, if you're listening, it's time to trade the wildlife for snack time and a comfy pen, buddy!
Space out. If you were up early in Western Australia on Sunday and happened to be looking at the sky, you might have seen something pretty amazing.
A bright green and orange fireball streaked across the sky just before 6am.
Spotted from Perth all the way to the Goldfields.
It wasn't a UFO or space junk from Russia.
It was, in fact, a meteor.
Astronomy experts say that it was likely made of iron and somewhere between the size of a cricket ball and a basketball.
And as it blazed through the Earth's atmosphere it heated up and glowed bright green and orange, creating a spectacular light show.
The team at the Perth Observatory described it as one hell of a meteor.
And scientists are now trying to figure out if any pieces actually made it to the ground.
And if you missed this one don't worry, about 100 tons of material from space enter Earth's atmosphere every year.
So I'm going to guess the moral of the story is get up early and look up.
Time for the s...quizz...
This is the part of the podcast where you get to test how well you've been listening.
