Greetings greetings everyone and welcome to Radio Headspace.
My name is Kaisanga and today is a wonderful Wednesday. What I would love to do today is dive deep
into the ocean of attachments. These are the things and the people that we cling to for security,
comfort and identity. I'm going to also explore how the practice of mindfulness can help us to
effectively and skillfully navigate the turbulent waters of attachment. As you can hear from my
ocean metaphors, I'm longing for a beach trip. Soon come soon come. Summer is right around the corner.
But anyways, I digress. So attachments come in many forms, material possessions, relationships,
beliefs and even certain experiences positive or negative. And what's wild is that we often
believe our happiness and fulfillment is dependent on their presence in our lives. We have invested
our time, our energy and our emotions into these attachments that we cling to them so tightly
as if they were life rafts in a stormy sea. Okay, I promised that was the last ocean metaphor.
But here's the paradox. As we're clinging to these things that we believe we can't live without,
they're the very things that are weighing us down. Oftentimes trapping us in cycles of fear,
anxiety and suffering. Whether it's the latest technology, the approval of others,
or the illusion of control, attachments cause us to have a limited vision of reality and can
prevent us from experiencing true happiness. I realized how attachment was present in my own life
last month when we had a phone outage. For some reason, the phone service I use, which shall
remain nameless, was completely out nationwide. When I tell you, I kind of freaked out and I know
for a fact that 99.99% of y'all can relate to this freak out. Like most people in the world today,
my phone is everything. I've accepted that this is just the world that we live in today.
And I have to admit that it was so eye-opening and frankly, hell of scary to realize how
emotionally attached I am to my phone. So the question is, how do we navigate these waters?
I take that back. I said no more ocean metaphors. I mean, how do we manage this attachment that's
present? Well, let's start by talking about the flip side of attachment, which is letting go.
Contrary to popular belief, letting go isn't about renouncing the world and retreating into
isolation. Rather, it's about cultivating a deep sense of inner peace and equanimity,
regardless of the external circumstances. It's about releasing our emotional grip on the things
that we hold dear, recognizing that true happiness lies within. And this also means sometimes letting
go of the people that we hold dear. If we're holding on so tight to these things and others,
then we're not opening ourselves up to what's present in the here and now.
I saw this played out numerous times with my clients when I was practicing psychotherapy.
One client in particular was holding on to her ex so strongly that she didn't realize her best friend
was a perfect match. Luckily, it wasn't too late when she came to her senses. So to speak,
I'll be visiting this aspect in a bit. So how can we cultivate letting go in a world that glorifies
attachment? This is where our mindfulness practice comes into play. Practicing non-judgmental
awareness and presence in the present moment. Mindfulness teaches us to observe our attachments
with clarity and compassion without getting swept away by them. It teaches us how to gently
let go. Remembering that letting go is one of the key concepts of mindfulness. Mindfulness teaches
us to become aware of our thoughts, emotions and sensations as they arise, allowing us to see our
attachments for what they truly are, transient and impermanent. By observing our attachments with
mindfulness, we can begin to loosen their grip on our hearts and minds, creating space for receiving
the present moment. Practicing mindfulness and meditation also helps us to build up our resilience
in the face of loss and change. When we inevitably find ourselves without the objects of our attachment,
whether it's a cherished possession, like my phone, or perhaps a beloved relationship,
mindfulness helps to keep us grounded in the present moment, reminding us of our inherent worth
and wholeness. And I want to take a quick opportunity here, as I stated earlier, to put a spotlight on
when we cling to certain people, like friends, family, romantic partners, as sources of love,
validation and belonging. So healthy relationships can for sure enrich our lives immeasurably,
and this attachment to specific individuals can lead to suffering when they inevitably change
or depart from our lives. So how can mindfulness prepare us for the ebb and flow of relationships?
Well, it's by teaching us to cultivate love and compassion for ourselves and others,
regardless of the outcome. Through mindfulness practices such as loving kindness meditation,
we can nurture a sense of connection and empathy that actually transcends the boundaries of attachment.
And lastly, letting go doesn't mean you have to completely forget. For sure, remembering those
loved ones or precious experiences that have come into your life over the years. Feeling the happiness
enjoy they can produce, or on the flip side, remembering that personal experience that wasn't
healthy for you and the negative feelings they produced. And then gently letting it go.
Okay, posing there for now. I invite you to check out the loving kindness meditation on the app.
And if you have any questions, you can reach me on Instagram, at Kaisanga Giskomba.
All right, I look forward to connecting with you again tomorrow. Peace always.
