Trendy or Timeless: Navigating the Modern Fashion Landscape

In this episode of Anything Goes, host Emma Chamberlain dives back into her "Trendy or Timeless" series. She notes that the pace of the trend cycle has slowed significantly, leaving the current fashion landscape feeling less defined and harder to categorize. Chamberlain explores a variety of items, analyzing whether they are fleeting "flashes in the pan" or enduring staples.

The Labubu Phenomenon: A Collectible Trend

Chamberlain describes the "Labubu"—a creepy-cute stuffed animal—as a cultural obsession reminiscent of the Stanley Cup craze. While she appreciates their aesthetic and how they complement the "Jane Birkin-ing the bag" trend, she finds the extreme "culture around it" and the "blind box" purchasing model too intense. She categorizes the Labubu as a trend, noting that it will likely become "saturated" and lose its status symbol, though she acknowledges that individual, long-term attachment to a specific piece could arguably be "timeless."

Timeless Basics: White Tanks, Polka Dots, and Stripes

Chamberlain declares the white tank top "undeniably timeless," arguing that it is a "closet staple" that can be elevated or layered. She expresses mild frustration that it is currently trending, suggesting that people are "freaking out" over a basic necessity. Similarly, she defends polka dots and stripes as "perfect patterns" that are "not quite busy enough" to be fatiguing. Unlike plaid, which she finds "hit or miss," stripes and polka dots are, in her view, impossible to get wrong.

Color Trends: The Case for Butter Yellow

Addressing the popularity of "butter yellow," Chamberlain clarifies that this is simply pastel yellow. She contrasts it with neon colors, which she labels as "fatiguing to look at" and inherently trendy. By contrast, pastel yellow is a "classic" color that has appeared in fashion history for centuries, making it a "timeless" choice.

The Evolution of Athleisure

Chamberlain presents a surprising take on athletic wear, suggesting that wearing activewear as everyday fashion is "timeless" because it is functional and has become a permanent shift in lifestyle. She distinguishes between "truly functional activewear" (timeless) and hyper-specific, aesthetic-driven micro-trends—like uncomfortable wrap tops or impractical cuts—which she labels as "trendy."

Early 2000s Purses and Bubble Skirts

Reflecting on the return of chaotic, maximalist early 2000s bags (like the Balenciaga City bag), Chamberlain remains skeptical. She finds them "tacky" and "exhausting to look at," arguing they have a "short shelf life." Conversely, she surprises herself by labeling bubble skirts and bloomers as "timeless." She argues that the silhouette of the bubble skirt is "understated" and classic enough to be styled in modern ways, provided one avoids loud, trendy patterns.

Footwear and Accessories: Mesh, Flip-Flops, and Totes

  • Mesh Flats: Despite being "oversaturated," Chamberlain deems them timeless due to their versatility, comparing them to the Tabi shoe, which she has moved from her "trendy" list to her "timeless" list.
  • Flip-Flop Heels: She classifies the simple kitten-heel flip-flop as "forever," distinguishing it from platform shoes, which she views as the "epitome of a trendy shoe."
  • L.L. Bean Boat Totes: These are "absolutely timeless" because of their functional design, thick canvas material, and the personal touch of monogramming.

The High-Risk Trend: Thin Eyebrows

Chamberlain classifies thin eyebrows as a "high risk" trend. Because the look is "not always in style" and can be "somewhat permanent" if hair does not grow back, she advises against it. She prefers the natural, bushy aesthetic, highlighting that unlike a scarf or a bag, eyebrows are a choice that requires significant dedication to maintain through shifting cycles.

Conclusion: A Shift in Perspective?

Chamberlain concludes by wondering if she is changing or if the culture is shifting. She observes that after years of "micro-trends," people are gravitating toward items that offer longevity. Ultimately, she suggests that "anything can be timeless if you want it to be," provided you are intentional about your personal style rather than just chasing the latest viral item.
