And now, it's time for Who Smarted?
Psst, hey, Smarty Pants, I don't know about you, but after running around all day, I'm thinking it's time for a nice, cool treat, and there's nothing better than a big bowl of...
Aaaaaaaah! Whoa, whoa, whoa, my good sir, what are you doing?
And why are you doing it so loudly?
Why, I'm screaming, and screaming is more effective when it's loud!
Aaaaaaaah! Yeah, I noticed.
And you're not wrong.
But why are you screaming?
You mentioned you're going to have a cool treat, right?
And the best cool treat is the one I scream for.
Oh, I get it. I scream.
You scream. We all scream for ice cream.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on.
I know that's how the saying goes, but that's not how people usually scream for ice cream.
No? No? No. It's more of a happy, cheerful scream as if you won a prize.
Oh, something like this?
Yay! Yeah, that's more like it.
But smarty pants, what if ice cream disappeared?
Ah! Okay, now that's an appropriate scream.
Ah, get over it. Uh, who are you?
I'm Good, and I burp for frozen yogurt.
Uh, what's that now, besides being disgusting?
I said, who needs ice cream when you get frozen yogurt?
Besides, it's better for you.
Did you hear that? Okay, okay, I'm doing a podcast here.
Can we ease up on all the screaming and belching?
Whatever. Oh, boy. Anyway, smarty pants, what would you do if there was no ice cream?
I know what I'd do.
Nope, nope, no screaming.
Screaming. And you, what's your name again?
Gert. Ah, like yogurt.
How did your parents know you'd love it so much?
Just lucky, I guess.
Anyway, smarty pants, do you agree with Gert?
Is frozen yogurt really a good alternative for ice cream?
How about other frozen treats like gelato?
Where did they come from and could they actually be better for you or even tastier than ice cream?
Don't make me do it!
Scream your head off for all I care.
I still say frozen yogurt's better.
We'll find out when we take a delicious frozen whiff of science and history on...
Who's Smarted? Who's Smarted?
Who's Smart? Is it you?
Is it me? Is it science?
Or history? Listen up, everyone.
Hi, Smarty Pants. It's the trusty narrator, the host of Who Smarted?
First, a big welcome to all our new listeners.
Welcome to the Smarty family.
Here's a nice five -star review from one of you.
Hi, trusty. This is my new favorite podcast. I listen in the car with my sister and even before bed.
I'm telling all my friends, too.
Sean P., Ohio. Thanks, Sean.
And that's a great idea.
So Smarty Fam, would you mind doing me a favor?
Tell one friend or another parent or an educator today about who's smarted?
Because the only thing that's better than listening to who's smarted is listening to who's smarted with a friend.
Okay, Smarty Pants, it's no surprise that frozen desserts are super popular all around the world.
In fact, people eat billions of them each year, with one in particular as the universal favorite.
Ice cream for ice cream!
Yay! But what if ice cream as we know it no longer existed?
This is Chet Nickerson reporting live with a shocking piece of breaking news.
Ice cream, as we know it, is gone The only cones left are traffic cones Sundays are just a day of the week And the ice cream truck now serves only ice And cream Oh, the homogenized horror The calcium -filled calamity This reporter has been rendered speechless And desertless And now the weather Okay, okay, so maybe ice cream doesn't need to disappear forever to get the point across, but there are other popular frozen treats out there, including Froyo, which is another name for frozen yogurt.
I bet right yogurt.
You know, that doesn't rhyme as well as you think it does.
Eh, whatever. Anywho, frozen yogurt has been around for a good while now, and it's been a delight for those who want the flavor and cool creaminess of ice cream, but not all the unhealthy fat.
However, Froyo... Whoa, what was that?
Ciao, my friends. That was me, Gelindo.
And I throw... for gelato.
Plates, that is. Okay, these crazy dessert rhymes have got to stop before someone gets hurt.
I'll tell you what hurts.
It hurts when anyone thinks there is a better frozen dessert than the one.
The only, the lush, the creamy, the flavorful, the versatile, the delicioso, gelato.
Oh, no, no, no, no. One second there, bub.
I didn't trust the narrator over here was about to tell the smarty pants that the better frozen dessert is Froyo.
Froyo? That is a joke, right?
Gelato is the best ice cream alternative.
alternative. What are you talking about?
Everyone knows frozen yogurt's been the healthier choice for a long, long time.
Uh, is that true? Smarty Pants, what do you think?
Which one's been around the longest?
Gelato, fro -yo, or ice cream?
Hey, that's not fair.
I never said fro -yo was older than ice cream.
Ice cream's been around forever.
Smarty Pants, the history of ice cream is a bit foggy, with nobody knowing who invented it, though historians believe it first appeared in one particular country.
Is it A, India? B, Germany?
Or C, China? The answer is C, China.
And if you heard our Who Smarted episode on ice cream, you might remember when this happened.
Was it 500 years ago?
1 ,000 years ago? Or over 2 ,000 years ago?
The answer is over 2 ,000 years ago.
Whoa. That's all very nice.
But if you are from Italy, you know that's not the answer.
That's because ice cream wasn't really ice cream until it was perfected in Italy about 500 years ago After explorer Marco Polo brought the old stuff to my country Chefs changed it into a smoother, creamier masterpiece And served it at a court of noble dukes in Florence in 1595 To name it, they went to the Italian wharf for frozen and came up with a beautiful name.
Gelato. You really don't need to throw anything.
Whatever. And when was this Fro -Yo invented?
Hey, just like with you.
Yogurt itself has been around a wicked long time.
Thousands of years, in fact.
But what about how old is frozen yogurt?
Smartypants, can you guess?
Is it A, 300 years?
B, 100 years? Or C, 50 years?
The answer is C. Yep, it was invented in the 1970s.
People were starting to improve their health around them.
And as we all know, ice cream ain't too good for you.
One ice cream maker came up with the idea of chilling an already popular dairy treat that was known to be healthier.
And just like that, frozen yoga was born.
Any ideas where this happened, Smarty Pants?
Was it A, Brazil, B, the United States, or C, the United Kingdom?
The answer is B, the United States.
Massachusetts, to be exact.
But soon it appeared in Texas, New York, and then all over the country.
And the world. Everybody burps for yogurt.
Can I just say one thing?
While dairy products like fro -yo, gelato, and ice cream can cause stomach gas, and perhaps even some burping.
That's not how the saying goes.
Whatever. Trusty, tell the Smarty Pants to stop with the ice cream and grab a much better scoop of froyo.
Disgraziano, gelato is mucha, mucha better.
Please. Gelato is just fancy dance ice cream.
Missgoosey, gelato is not your basic ice cream.
Smarty Pants, true or false?
Ice cream and gelato have similar ingredients.

Now back to Who Smarted?
So, Smarty Pants, what's the difference between ice cream and gelato?
Let's start with the ingredients.
True or false? Both ice cream and gelato have similar ingredients.
The answer is true.
Both ice cream and gelato contain milk, cream, and sugar.
Ah, yes, but there's a small but important difference in the way those ingredients are used.
Ice cream has more fatty cream, while gelato has more milk.
Ice cream also tends to have egg yolks, while gelato usually does not.
And while up to a quarter of ice cream, that's 25%, is fat, gelato is only about 4 to 9 % fat.
Whoa. So, smarty pants, knowing ice cream has a higher percentage of fat and more cream, would you say ice cream is creamier than gelato?
You could say that, but you'd be wrong.
It turns out gelato is actually creamier.
But why is that? Is it because A.
Fat does not make desserts creamy B.
Ice cream has more air than gelato Or C.
Ice cream also contains chewing gum Which reduces creaminess The answer is P.
Oh, it all has to do with the air And while air is put into both gelato And ice cream as they're being made A lot more air goes into ice cream And that air makes it less creamy Gelato is about 20 -30 % air while ice cream can be 50 % air or more.
So when you're eating an ice cream cone, half of it is just air.
Mamma mia, gelato, while still cold, tends to be a bit warmer than ice cream and that brings out more flavor so it tastes even better.
So to recap, gelato is healthier and tastier and that is why I throw for gelato.
Facto. Couldn't you just be a glow for gelato?
A glow? Never mind.
Yeah, never mind indeed.
You say cream gives ice cream too much of that unhealthy fat?
Well, you know what's usually not made with cream at all?
Froyo. Fair point. Smartypants, what ingredient does froyo have instead of cream?
Really, Namrata? Could you ask an easier question?
Question. Ice cream has cream.
Frozen yogurt has yogurt.
It's right there in the name.
Right. Not only that, frozen yogurt typically has less fat than ice cream and gelato.
And because it's made with yogurt, it also contains live probiotic cultures.
Smartypants, do you know what live probiotic cultures are?
Is it A, bacteria? B, vitamins?
Or C, minerals? The answer, perhaps surprisingly, is A.
That's right. Only we're talking good bacteria.
The kind that can lower your blood pressure, build up your immunity against disease, and even make your digestive system healthier.
Not to be a fro -yo pooper, but some frozen yogurts don't have that good bacteria.
Yeah, and some ice creams and gelatos have all kinds of stinky ingredients, too.
You just gotta know what you're eating.
Check to make sure the type of fro -yo you're snacking on has these probiotic cultures.
But get this. Not only is fro -yo awesomely healthy, it tastes great too.
There was this little survey a while back that said 79 % of dessert eaters said they like fro -yo more than ice cream.
That's like 8 out of every 10 people.
How about that? That's why I burp for frozen yogurt.
Uh, question? Who conducted that survey?
Uh, Frozen Yogurt Company.
Right, so maybe the source is a little biased.
The truth is, ice cream is still the leader when it comes to frozen desserts.
Ah! I mean, yay! Now, you've heard my guests insist that fro -yo and gelato are healthier and tastier than ice cream.
But if that's the case, why do more people eat ice cream?
Ah, fake chews. No. The truth is, all three of these frozen treats have one ingredient in common that makes them all a lot less healthy, hurting any advantage fro -yo or gelato might have. And if you heard our episode on ice cream, you know this common ingredient keeps ice cream, fro -yo, and gelato from freezing into a solid block.
Go ahead, shout it out.
Yep, I heard a lot of you say it.
It's sugar. I like the sugar.
Oh, yeah, gotta have that sweetness.
Right. Only, too much sugar is not good for you.
And even though fro -yo and gelato claim to be healthier than ice cream, fro -yo can have just as much sugar as ice cream.
And gelato can have even more.
But, that's only if you eat the same amount of gelato as you would ice cream.
Because gelato is so dense and so rich, it's usually served in smaller amounts.
So you get a smaller amount of fat, sugar, and calories than you would from a regular serving of of ice cream.
Hold on. Smaller servings?
Who wants that? Have a normal -sized scoop of froyo for a healthier treat.
A plain scoop, maybe.
But a lot of people add toppings and flavors to froyo that take away its nutritional edge.
However, keep in mind there are health benefits to all these treats, including ice cream.
They provide essential vitamins, calcium, protein, phosphorus, phosphorus, and potassium, all of which your body can use.
You just can't eat too much of it.
So, uh, which one should you choose?
Fortunately, there are so many dessert...
opportunities, you don't have to pick just one.
Not to mention, there are other frozen treats, like custard, Italian ices, icies, popsicles, and more.
My mouth is watering just thinking about them all.
Well, I wouldn't mind trying a throw for gelato.
And I'd like to burp for a frozen yogurt And let me guess, you're gonna scream for ice cream Actually, I think I might take a little break for some dessert meat cake Ow, one dessert meat cake coming right up Trusty, I know you want some Oh boy, I think I might have to dessert Dessert Gotta go A double shout out to Hannah and Jack in Andover, Massachusetts We hear you love Who Smarted because it's amazing and you both learn new things Well I just learned I've got two amazing smarty pants in Andover, Massachusetts.
