📋 Summary

The Predator of Highway 20: Unmasking John Ackroyd

This podcast episode delves into the chilling criminal history of John Ackroyd, a man whose predatory behavior along Oregon’s Highway 20 spanned decades, leaving a trail of missing women and unsolved mysteries in his wake.

The Disappearance of Kay Turner

In 1978, during a Christmas getaway in Camp Sherman, Kay Turner disappeared while on a morning jog. Despite extensive searches, investigators were baffled by the lack of evidence. However, trackers reported finding two sets of footprints—one matching Kay’s Nike shoes and another larger set—suggesting a struggle. It wasn't until eight months later that John Ackroyd, a local highway worker, "discovered" Kay’s remains, claiming he had stumbled upon them while hunting rabbits. His account was immediately suspicious, as there were few rabbits in the area, and he had previously been interviewed as a witness.

A History of Violence and Police Oversight

Ackroyd’s predatory nature was not new. In 1977, Marlene Gabrielson survived a harrowing sexual assault by Ackroyd after hitchhiking. Despite her providing compelling evidence, including a sexual assault kit, the police failed to prosecute him, largely because they chose to believe Ackroyd’s claims that the encounter was consensual. This failure to protect victims and the reliance on flawed polygraph tests became a recurring theme in Ackroyd’s long, unchecked reign of terror.

The Vanishing of Rachanda Pickle

In 1990, the nightmare continued when 13-year-old Rachanda Pickle, Ackroyd’s stepdaughter, went missing from their home in Santiam Junction. Once again, Ackroyd was the last person to see the victim alive. Despite police finding a rope with Rachanda’s hair and blood in the back of his truck, Ackroyd provided weak excuses, claiming the girl played with kittens using the rope. The lack of decisive action allowed him to remain free, despite rumors of him sexually abusing Rachanda.

The Breakthrough and Justice

It was not until an investigator re-interviewed Pam, the wife of Ackroyd’s accomplice Roger Dale Beck, that the case against the duo finally solidified. Pam revealed that on the day Kay Turner disappeared, the men had returned home covered in blood and admitted to the murder. Forensic advancements also revealed that Kay’s clothing had been cut in a manner consistent with Ackroyd’s known MO.

In 1993, Ackroyd was finally convicted of Kay Turner’s murder and sentenced to life in prison. He later entered a no-contest plea for the murder of Rachanda Pickle to avoid parole, though her body was never recovered. He died in prison in 2013.

The Shadow of Unsolved Cases

The episode concludes by questioning the full extent of Ackroyd's crimes. Several other women and teenagers went missing or were found dead along Highway 20 during the years Ackroyd was active. While no other cases were officially linked to him, the pattern of disappearances and the discovery of clothing—often cut in the same specific way Ackroyd treated his victims—suggests that his reign of terror may have been far more extensive than the crimes for which he was held accountable.
