  • Managing Prolactin: High dopamine release (such as that following intense experiences or orgasm) is often followed by a spike in prolactin, which causes lethargy and a refractory period. Supplements like vitamin B6 and zinc can act as prolactin inhibitors, potentially helping maintain motivation.
  • Avoid Middle-of-the-Night Light: Exposure to bright light between 10 PM and 4 AM activates the habenula, a structure that suppresses the reward circuitry and blunts future dopamine release, effectively acting as an antagonist to motivation.

Addressing Procrastination and Addiction

Procrastination often stems from a failure to engage the dopamine system. For some, internal stress (epinephrine) is the only catalyst for action. Huberman suggests that instead of relying on impending deadlines, one can use tools like super-oxygenation breathing to self-direct adrenaline and focus.
