Insights into IELTS Speaking Performance: A Mock Exam Analysis

This podcast episode features an IELTS speaking practice session with a candidate named Marin, evaluated by an experienced former examiner. The session provides a clear window into the expectations for various proficiency bands, highlighting both strengths and common pitfalls.

Fluency and Coherence: The Challenge of Part 3

Marin displays a strong start in Part 1, demonstrating natural confidence and a good level of fluency. However, the examiner notes that as the questions become more challenging in Part 3, Marin struggles to generate ideas. The examiner emphasizes that in the IELTS test, "you cannot depend on the examiner to explain it to you," advising candidates to ask for clarification directly rather than waiting for assistance.

Furthermore, the examiner observes that pauses are natural, but there is a distinction between pausing to think of an idea versus pausing to search for vocabulary. While Marin uses effective discourse markers like "I guess" or "Well" to manage her speech, her difficulty in developing answers in the final section ultimately impacted her fluency score, leading to a downward adjustment from an initial estimate of 8 to a final 7.

Vocabulary and Grammatical Accuracy

Marin’s vocabulary is generally strong, but she encounters specific issues with grammatical accuracy. The examiner points out consistent errors in plurals, such as saying "I get to go to the famous place" instead of "famous places" and "we go to cafe" instead of "cafes." While these errors do not disqualify a candidate from a high score, they prevent reaching the highest band levels.

Additionally, the examiner notes a few slips in phrasing. For instance, when describing a crying baby, she said "the baby was keep crying," whereas the correct usage would be "the baby kept crying." These small, repetitive mistakes in complex structures serve as key indicators for examiners when differentiating between a band 7 and an 8.

Pronunciation and Connected Speech

One of Marin's most significant strengths is her pronunciation. The examiner highlights that she avoids "flat pronunciation" by correctly identifying stressed words in sentences. She correctly emphasizes "I wasn't able to celebrate my birthday," which is a hallmark of a band 7 or higher performance. Her natural intonation and use of connected speech are consistent throughout the test, earning her a solid band 8 in this category.

Examiner’s Advice for Candidates

Throughout the breakdown, several practical tips emerge:

  • Don't Panic: If you need a moment to think, don't worry that your score is dropping. It is better to take a moment to formulate a thought than to ramble.
  • Structure Your Answers: When struggling with complex questions in Part 3, start with a "clear, simple answer" and then proceed to explain or develop that point. This prevents the candidate from losing track of the question.
  • Avoid Disappointment: The examiner warns that Part 3 is designed to "push you to your limits." If a candidate becomes visibly disappointed by a previous answer, it can distract them from the next question. Staying focused is essential for maintaining performance until the end of the test.

Final Assessment

While Marin initially showed potential for a higher score, her struggles in the final section led to a final assessment of 7 for fluency, 7 for vocabulary, 7 for grammar, and 8 for pronunciation. This session serves as a valuable case study for students to understand that while a high level of natural English is important, the ability to consistently develop ideas and maintain grammatical precision under pressure is what defines the difference between a good score and a top-tier score.
