📋 Summary

The Disappearance of a Hockey Prospect

In August 1989, 23-year-old Duncan McPherson, a former first-round draft pick for the New York Islanders, embarked on a European vacation before beginning a new chapter as a hockey coach in Scotland. While visiting the Austrian Alps, he decided to learn how to snowboard at the Stubai Glacier Ski Resort. This resort was unique because it operated on a glacier, allowing for year-round skiing by using 'huge snowcat tractors' to churn the ice into powder. On August 9th, after a morning lesson, Duncan opted to continue practicing alone in foggy conditions. He never returned.

A Fourteen-Year Search

Duncan’s disappearance remained a mystery for over a decade. His parents, desperate for answers, traveled to Europe to conduct their own search, distributing flyers and eventually discovering his car abandoned at the resort. Despite their relentless efforts and a search party that 'combed this glacier up and down,' no trace of Duncan was found. For 14 years, the mystery lingered until July 2003, when a resort employee spotted a 'bright yellow piece of trash'—which turned out to be Duncan’s jacket—protruding from the melting ice.

The Tragic Reality and the Cover-up

While the official narrative from the Stubai Glacier resort suggests Duncan simply fell into a crevasse, the physical evidence discovered in 2003 tells a much darker story. When his remains were recovered, it was clear that Duncan’s body and his snowboard had been 'chopped apart.' The prevailing theory among investigators and the family is that while Duncan was practicing on the slope, he broke his leg after catching an edge. A resort employee operating a snowcat tractor, blinded by the fog, accidentally ran over him.

Rather than seeking help, the panicked employee allegedly 'tied him up and dragged him behind the snowcat' to a deep crevasse, dumping him inside and covering the site with the tractor to hide the evidence. Because the statute of limitations had expired by the time the body was discovered in 2003, no individual was ever held accountable for the horrific act. Duncan, preserved in the ice, remained 23 years old for over a decade, a chilling reminder of a crime that went unpunished.
