📋 Summary

The Disappearance of Shannon Graves

In February 2017, the life of 28-year-old Shannon Graves took a dark turn in Youngstown, Ohio. Living with her boyfriend, Arturo Nevoa, Shannon felt increasingly trapped. Their relationship, which began with a spark, had devolved into constant arguments and deep-seated mistrust. Shannon, a woman who valued independence and change, felt her dreams of becoming a cosmetologist were being stifled by Arturo. After a heated argument on February 24th, Arturo stormed out, leaving Shannon alone—a moment she initially perceived as a potential fresh start, unaware it would be her final day.

The Investigation Begins

Four months later, in June 2017, Shannon’s half-sister, Debbie DePaul, filed a missing persons report. Detective Mike Lambert of the Youngstown Police Department was initially skeptical, as it was unlike Shannon to disappear for such long stretches without contact, yet her history of spontaneous travel made the timeline difficult to assess. Arturo, when questioned, claimed they had broken up shortly after their fight and that he had no knowledge of her whereabouts, suggesting she had moved to Cleveland. The investigation took a complicated turn when it was revealed that Shannon’s ex-boyfriend, John Scarrato, was conducting his own "investigation," complete with photos of cars staked out near Shannon’s apartment, hoping to find her.

A Grisly Discovery

Desperate for answers, Debbie consulted a psychic medium who pointed toward a bridge. Miraculously, Debbie and her friend discovered saw blades, a rope, and a pink sock—Shannon’s favorite color—at a local bridge. While Detective Lambert remained cautious about psychic leads, the discovery of a body in a chest freezer in a nearby town in July 2017 confirmed his worst fears. A woman, intending to use the freezer to store meat, pried it open and discovered human remains. Forensic experts identified the body as Shannon Graves. The couple who owned the house claimed the freezer belonged to their friend, "Anthony Gonzalez" (also known as Tony G), who had asked to store it due to power issues at his home.

Unraveling the Conspiracy

As the investigation intensified, John Scarrato provided a crucial lead: a house party where a man named Andrew Herman had been burning Shannon’s belongings in a bonfire. Investigators recovered a charred friendship bracelet with "Shannon" spelled out in beads from the ashes. Andrew Herman, a man obsessed with serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, eventually confessed to the horror. He revealed that "Anthony Gonzalez" was actually Arturo Nevoa, Shannon’s boyfriend.

Arturo had murdered Shannon with a hammer in her bathroom. He then enlisted his other girlfriend to help move the body, and together with Andrew, they systematically dismembered Shannon’s remains. They attempted to use sulfuric acid to dissolve the body, but when that failed, they stored the remains in a freezer. The trio’s attempt to cover their tracks was ultimately undone by the physical evidence found at the bonfire and the subsequent confession provided by Herman. Arturo Nevoa was sentenced to 48 years to life, while his accomplices received significant prison terms for their roles in one of the most horrific crimes in Youngstown’s history.
