📋 Summary

The Hungry Hippo: A Lesson in Integrity

In the latest episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear shares a traditional folktale from Africa titled "Hungry Hippo." This story serves as a cautionary fable about the importance of trust, the consequences of selfishness, and the weight of keeping one's promises.

The Origin of the Hippo’s Greed

Long ago, the Hippopotamus was a small creature, no larger than a golden retriever, living on the grassy plains. Despite his modest size, Hippo possessed a "very big appetite." His defining trait was an absolute refusal to share his food. Whether approached by a zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, or warthog, Hippo’s response was always selfish: "I will not share this grass. This grass is mine." As he consumed more, his body grew to an enormous size, eventually causing his hide to become tight, cracked, and painful under the sweltering sun.

A Bargain with the Supreme Spirit

Desperate for relief from the heat, Hippo observed water-dwelling creatures like turtles, otters, and crocodiles enjoying the cool river. He decided to petition the "Supreme Spirit" to transform him into a water creature. The deity, recognizing Hippo’s suffering, agreed to the transformation but set strict conditions. Hippo had to stop eating grass, switch to a diet of fish, and most importantly, promise to "share them with your fellow water dwellers."

The Supreme Spirit issued a stern warning: "If you break your promise and break my trust, there will be a price to pay." Driven by his immediate need for comfort, Hippo readily agreed, despite his long-standing habit of hoarding resources.

The Breach of Trust and the Price of Deception

Once in the water, Hippo’s old habits resurfaced. When other animals asked to share his fish, Hippo dismissed them, shouting, "These fish are mine. Now beat it." By hoarding the food, Hippo violated his sacred agreement.

Confronted by the Supreme Spirit, Hippo was forced to face the consequences of his greed. The punishment was designed to ensure he could never hide his actions again:

  1. Dietary Restriction: He was forced to return to eating grass, but with a "smaller appetite" to ensure there was enough for others.
  2. The Mouth Test: To prove he wasn't eating fish, Hippo was required to stretch his mouth open wide—up to four feet—allowing the Supreme Spirit to inspect his jaws.
  3. The Tail Inspection: Perhaps the most unusual consequence involved his "bristly little tail." Hippo was commanded to spin his tail like an "airplane propeller" while relieving himself, scattering his dung so the Supreme Spirit could inspect the piles for fish bones.

Conclusion: A Living Legacy

To this day, the story suggests that hippos exhibit these behaviors—opening their mouths wide and spinning their tails—not just as biological habits, but as a lingering proof of their ancient promise. The tale concludes by encouraging listeners to practice kindness, suggesting that small acts, such as those kept in a "kindness jar," are the antidote to the kind of selfishness that led Hippo to lose the trust of the divine.
