Do you know how many meanings the word get has?
It's a small word, but it has so many uses.
In today's episode, we look at six essential definitions of the word get.
Are you ready? Let's get started.
Welcome to the Coffee Break English Show.
I'm Nick. And I am Annabelle.
How are you doing, Nick?
I'm really good, yeah.
I'm really excited about this episode.
Maybe a little sad.
Yes, it's a little bit sad because this is the final episode of this season.
But I think that we are going to be covering something very exciting and very interesting.
It's the verb to get.
Yes, absolutely. It's my favourite word, get.
So it's great to go out with a bang.
Yes, yes. So to get has like different meanings, no?
There are many, many meanings of the verb get.
I think there are over 30 meanings of the verb get.
A lot. But we want to look at the most important, the most common meaning.
So we're looking at six everyday uses of the word get.
So are we looking at phrasal verbs using the verb to get in this episode?
We're not going to look at phrasal verbs because there are so many of them.
But we do have a link in the description where you can find more information on phrasal verbs.
with get. Excellent.
So it's six meanings of the verb, just the verb to get, not any phrasal verb.
Shall we start with the first one?
Yeah, let's get started.
So first one is get to mean become.
Okay. So we use get with adjectives to mean to become and then the adjective.
So an example could be take an umbrella with you when you go to Scotland or you'll get wet.
Okay, yeah. But it can also mean the idea of change.
So we can use get with our comparative adjective to show that change is happening.
So in winter, the weather gets colder and the days get longer.
Okay, I see. So to get meaning to become and it's usually followed by an adjective.
Yeah, exactly. Excellent.
Number two is get to mean to catch or to take with transport.
Yeah. So, we use this when there's a mode of transport that we can miss.
Oh, interesting. Okay.
Like an example? I got a taxi to the airport.
Okay. I usually get the train to work.
but I can't use it with modes of transport that you can't miss.
Like the bike, for example?
Yeah, if I get a bike, it has a different meaning.
Yeah. You can get a bike as a present, for example.
Oh, that's true, yes.
And that leads us on to our next meaning.
So meaning number three is actually three slightly different meanings of get.
Okay. But they're all quite similar.
The first one is obtain.
So get can mean obtain, for example, like I got an A in my exam.
Okay, yeah, so I obtained that grade.
Exactly. Or it can mean to receive.
So for example, on your birthday, I got a scarf for my birthday because my birthday is in the winter.
Yeah, so the scarf was the gift, like you were receiving it.
Yeah. And confusingly, it can also mean to buy.
So I can buy that present.
I got my brother a scarf for his birthday.
Okay. So then does it, does it mean that I got a bike?
Can mean I bought a bike and also I received a bike?
Exactly. And here it depends on the context.
Okay, I see. So interesting.
Yeah. And you just need to be a little careful because I can get a present or I can get someone a present.
In one case I receive and in one case I buy.
Okay I see and so before moving on let's can we do a recap of the meanings that we saw so far?
Yeah absolutely. So meaning number one was to become.
So it's get with an adjective to mean become or to show change.
So get is getting cold I'll put on a jumper.
Okay number two. Number two was catch or take for transport.
So I get a train to work.
Excellent. And number three?
Was those three meanings.
That is to buy, to obtain and also to receive.
Exactly. Excellent.
So now meaning number four?
So meaning number four is understand.
Oh, I get it. Yes, I see what you did there.
Brilliant. Okay. So, with understand, we can use get in the way I can say I didn't get the joke.
Yeah. So, I didn't laugh.
Or he spoke really fast, so I didn't get what he said.
Okay, yeah. So, to get as to understand.
Actually, like, I think this is one of my favourite uses of to get because I remember, like, learning it, like, back in the time.
and yeah I felt very like a native speaker when I was using that like oh yes I get that.
Brilliant exactly and that's the the thing I love about Get is that it gives you that feeling that you're in control of the language because it's useful for almost any context.
Yes love that so the fifth use of to get.
So we've arrived at the fifth use of to get which is arrive.
Ah, I see. So in this case, we're using, it just says we use arrive, so get plus a location.
So I got to the football match late and I missed the first goal.
Okay, yeah. Or he always kisses his wife when he gets home.
So we have to get and then a location.
Yeah, exactly. Fantastic.
So now we've got to our final meaning, so meaning number six of get.
and that is to fetch or to go and take.
OK, do you have an example?
Yeah, so I can say, can you get me that book that's over there?
Or it's cold, let me get my jacket and then we can go.
OK, I see. I think it would be very useful to do some practice.
Yeah, absolutely. Before we do some practice, shall we just review the different meanings of get?
Oh yes, have been six of them?
There have been six.
So number one, become.
Number two is to catch. Yeah, number three was buy, obtain or receive.
Number four is to get us to understand.
Yeah, and number five was arrive.
And the final one that we saw, it was to fetch. Exactly, which means to go and take.
So are we ready for the quiz?
I think so, yes. Yes.
Great. So in this quiz, I'm going to give you a sentence and I just want you to choose which meaning of get we're using here.
OK, excellent. Yeah.
Remember, you can pause if you're watching or listening to play along.
OK, shall we go? Yes.
Dinner is ready. Come before it gets cold.
OK, so we have gets cold.
We have an adjective.
So I guess it means to become.
Yeah, absolutely. Awesome.
Number two, I always get socks for Christmas.
Oh, so it's for Christmas.
So you are receiving something because it's a gift. Exactly.
Awesome. So yeah, it's a gift I've received.
Yes. Absolutely. And I love getting socks for Christmas.
I love socks. Number three, she's a great student.
student, she always gets top marks.
Because it's a mark, it's a grade, then I think to get means to obtain?
In this case, obtain.
Absolutely. Number four, are we leaving?
Let me get my jacket.
This one is the sixth one, I remember, and it's to fetch. Yes, exactly.
Okay, final one. He got home late after work.
So it's to get followed by a location.
Yep. Then I think it's to arrive.
Yes, absolutely. Oh, thank you very much. Yes.
So we've got to the end of this episode and we've got to the end of season two of the show.
Yes, we have, Nick.
However, there is a written version of this episode in a blog article.
The link is in the description.
And if you've missed any of the episodes from season two of the show, make sure you check out our channel to find them.
Excellent. Thank you very much, Nick.
I enjoyed the practice and I also enjoy all the explanations.
No problem. Thank you for joining me and thank you for watching and listening at home.
That's all for now.
Happy Coffee Breaking.
