Embracing Simplicity: A Conversation with Courtney Carver on Living a Gentler Life

In this episode of Before Breakfast, host Laura Vandercam interviews Courtney Carver, a renowned advocate for minimalism and the author of the new book, Gentle. Carver shares her journey from a high-pressure advertising career to a life defined by simplicity, health, and intentional living, following her diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2006.

The Catalyst for Change: Health and Minimalism

Carver’s transition toward minimalism was not an aesthetic choice but a necessity driven by her health. After being diagnosed with MS, she realized that her life in advertising—characterized by "lots of deadlines" and "always overextending myself"—was unsustainable. She discovered that lowering stress was essential to her well-being. By simplifying her life, she began removing "clutter, debt, and job stress," effectively "removing things that really removed me from my life." Today, she describes her condition as being in "suspended animation," having remained stable since 2007.

Energy Management: The Spoon Theory

To manage her health and daily output, Carver highlights the "Spoon Theory," a concept originally identified by Christine Miserandino. The theory suggests that individuals have a finite amount of energy, represented by spoons, for each day. "We don't measure our energy, we just spend it until we're completely spent," Carver notes. By assigning energy units to tasks—such as "getting breakfast ready"—people can better mind how they exert themselves, ensuring they do not completely run out of energy before the day concludes.

Defining the "Gentle You"

Carver’s latest work, Gentle, encourages readers to connect with their "gentle you"—the inherent inner voice that emerges once one stops being "crazy busy all the time." She advocates for making decisions in advance to reduce the mental load. For example, when decluttering, she suggests a gentler approach: "hide it all, get it out of sight and give yourself a minute." This avoids the "decision fatigue" and emotional stress associated with immediate discarding.

Sustainable Habits and Morning Routines

Carver emphasizes that building habits should be gradual to avoid the cycle of failure. She recalls her own experience: "I started my morning routine... at five minutes." By adding only one minute to each activity per week, she created a sustainable framework that eventually evolved into a more robust practice. She argues that "it is so better to get there in six months than not," rather than attempting to change everything at once.

Project 333: Fashion and Decision Fatigue

Carver is widely known for her "Project 333 Minimalist Fashion Challenge," which involves dressing with 33 items or less for three months. This challenge was born from her realization that shopping was a source of "stress" rather than joy. By limiting her wardrobe, she eliminated the "stress of the emotional connection" to excessive belongings and freed herself from the anxiety of being judged by others. She notes that after years of practice, she has realized that "people don't really notice" what she wears, which has been "very freeing."

Reducing the Worry Load

To combat chronic worrying, Carver suggests practical steps:

  1. Writing it down: Seeing worries on paper makes them feel less real and helps distinguish what is within one's control.
  2. Reflection: Looking at past worries reveals that most feared outcomes never materialized.
  3. Distraction: Using podcasts or movies to "break out of that worry loop" can prevent the downward spiral of anxiety.

Ultimately, Carver finds that taking a day from "great to awesome" is often about "romanticizing the things that are already happening"—such as enjoying a morning cup of coffee—turning mundane tasks into "simple pleasures."
