To prove murder, investigators needed to detect drugs like Pavulon (pancuronium) or succinylcholine in the remains of the deceased. These drugs, used medically for intubation, cause paralysis and death by suffocation if administered without proper ventilation. Forensic scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory—the "Lab of Last Resort"—were tasked with an impossible mission: finding trace amounts of Pavulon in decomposed tissue.

Armando Alcaraz and his team faced a "haystack" of contamination, including embalming fluids, soil seepage, and the chemical signatures of death itself, such as putrescine and cadaverine. Using a "magic cartridge" designed to isolate specific chemicals, they successfully developed a test that could identify the unique signature of Pavulon. As Alcaraz described, the process was akin to a "figure skater" performing smooth, precise movements in a high-pressure environment.

A Motive of Convenience

When the lab confirmed the presence of Pavulon in the remains of six patients, including Selby Asatrian and Jose Alfaro Sr., the legal case against Saldivar was solidified. Upon his arrest, the reality of his motive was far more sinister than his initial "mercy killing" narrative. Saldivar admitted that he viewed patients as "irritants" who disrupted his workload. He confessed, "only when I was at my wit’s end on the staffing, I’d look at the board, who we got to get rid of."

Saldivar was eventually sentenced to multiple life terms without the possibility of parole. The irony of the case remains: had he been sentenced to death, the state would have utilized the very same drug, Pavulon, to carry out his execution. This case remains a testament to the power of forensic innovation, proving that when traditional evidence is absent, scientific perseverance can still ensure that justice is served.
