Interestingly, when they isolated the guesses of 3,000 self-identified "experts" (such as farmers), their average was 1,272 pounds, which was actually slightly less accurate than the crowd's collective estimate. As James Surowiecki, author of The Wisdom of Crowds, noted, "chasing the expert is a mistake," as the diverse perspectives of a large group often outperform the singular focus of a specialist.

Why Does It Work?

Surowiecki explains that this isn't "collective unconscious magic," but rather a matter of information aggregation. Every individual brings a unique life experience to their guess—a different mental "scale." While any single person’s guess may be significantly wrong, these individual errors tend to "wash out" or cancel each other out when averaged. The crowd effectively acts as a filter, where the specific biases and inaccuracies of the few are neutralized by the varied estimations of the many.

The Limits of Collective Wisdom

However, the podcast highlights that the wisdom of the crowd is not infallible. The hosts observed a phenomenon known as an "information cascade" when interviewing children at the fair; if one person stated a number, others would simply latch onto that estimate, losing the independence of their own judgment. This same vulnerability applies to complex systems like the stock market. While the market is an extraordinary tool for setting the value of companies, it is prone to "panics or bubbles" when individuals stop thinking independently and start following the herd.
