  • The 2008 Financial Crisis: Experts and investors alike outsourced their understanding to complex mathematical models regarding derivatives. Because the system was so complex, participants failed to recognize the risk, assuming that "big banks know what they are doing," which led to a cascading global collapse.

The Political Divide and Extremism

Fernbach observes that this illusion fuels modern political polarization. People often hold passionate, extreme views on complex policy issues despite having low levels of objective knowledge. Paradoxically, those with the strongest "counter-consensus views" often report the highest levels of subjective understanding. This confidence makes them resistant to counter-evidence, as they feel they already possess a complete grasp of the issue.

Combating the Illusion: Explanatory Thinking

To align our perceived knowledge with reality, Fernbach suggests a simple but difficult exercise: mechanistic explanation.

  1. Challenge Yourself: Attempt to explain a policy or procedure in your own words. The gaps in your knowledge will quickly reveal themselves, fostering humility.
  2. Foster Collaboration: When engaging in political disagreements, move away from "argumentative thinking" and toward "explanatory thinking."
