📋 Summary

The Hidden Saga of Jose Cuervo: From Revolution to Global Empire

In the latest episode of The Sporkful, host Dan Pashman sits down with journalist and author Ted Genovese to peel back the layers of a mystery that has spanned over a century. Genovese’s new book, Tequila Wars: Jose Cuervo and the Bloody Struggle for the Spirit of Mexico, explores the life of the man behind the world’s best-selling tequila brand—a figure who remained intentionally shrouded in secrecy to survive one of the most violent periods in Mexican history.

The Man Behind the Mask

Despite being a household name for over a hundred years, Jose Cuervo remains a historical enigma. Genovese explains that Cuervo’s anonymity was a deliberate survival strategy. "Cuervo had this tendency to kind of keep a low profile, to try to stay out of the newspapers," Genovese notes. During the Mexican Revolution, when many of his peers were executed, Cuervo’s ability to work "behind the scenes" as a "power broker" and "business tycoon" kept him alive. Because public and private records were frequently "raided and destroyed" to hide evidence of bribes or political affiliations, tracking Cuervo’s life required 12 years of meticulous research into fragmented archives.

A Marriage of Convenience and Power

Cuervo’s ascent to the head of the family business was far from a traditional fairy tale. After his father’s death left the business in debt, Cuervo worked for his great-uncle, Jesus Flores. Following Flores's death, his widow, Ana, realized that for the business to survive, she needed a husband to stand at the front. The marriage was a calculated business move, yet it proved to be a formidable partnership. While Jose handled the technological and political maneuvering, Ana was the "gregarious" force who built the essential social connections among the elite in Guadalajara and Mexico City.

Cartels and Survival

Perhaps the most shocking revelation in the book is the origin of the term "cartel" in the Mexican tequila industry. Facing destroyed distilleries, burned fields, and blown-up railroads during the revolution, Cuervo proposed a "union of tequila makers" with his greatest competitor, Eladio Souza. Influenced by a German business model, this collective was essentially the first Mexican cartel.

This cooperation was put to the ultimate test when Cuervo was arrested for treason. In a twist of irony, it was his rival, Eladio Souza, who saved him by testifying that Cuervo’s payments to revolutionary forces were "legal payments" rather than bribes. Souza’s defense was a calculated move to protect their shared business interests, proving that even in the heat of a "bloody struggle," the industry giants recognized a "shared fate."

The Price of Greed

As the U.S. approached Prohibition, the cartels capitalized on the opportunity to stockpile and export tequila. However, once the industry recovered, the "pendulum" of cooperation swung back toward violence. As Genovese describes, when the companies became "cocky" and "greedy," they abandoned their agreements to squeeze out competitors. This led to a series of violent "gun battles" in the town of Tequila. Following a suspicious illness that resulted in Jose Cuervo’s death in 1921, his more combative brothers took control, escalating the conflict into a full-scale war for market dominance.

A Legacy Reconnected

Today, the legacy of these families lives on in the town of Tequila, where descendants of both the Cuervo and Souza families operate distilleries side-by-side. Through Genovese’s research, the families have begun to share their private archives, turning old rivalries into new friendships. Tequila Wars serves as both a gripping history of a billion-dollar liquor brand and a profound look at how business, revolution, and personal ambition shaped the spirit of Mexico.
