The golden color was intended to signify superior quality, drawing inspiration from the Chinese royalty's affinity for yellow and the legendary Koh-I-Noor diamond. Eventually, other manufacturers copied this branding, cementing yellow as the universal color for pencils, even though it no longer serves as a reliable indicator of quality.

Understanding the "Number Two"

You have likely heard of the "number two" pencil. This designation refers to the softness of the graphite core. In 1795, a French engineer discovered that mixing graphite with clay allowed for varying levels of hardness.

  • Number 1 pencils are very soft and smudge easily.
  • Number 3 and 4 pencils are too hard, making marks that are often too light for tasks like filling out "bubble sheets" on standardized tests.
  • Number 2 pencils represent the perfect balance: dark enough to be visible, but hard enough to prevent excessive smudging.

From Bread to Rubber

Before the invention of the modern eraser, people actually used bread to remove pencil marks. It wasn't until around 1770 that a South American tree gum was discovered to be more effective. Because this substance could "rub" out marks, it was aptly named rubber. Today, most pencils come equipped with these rubber erasers at the end.

A Tool of Record-Breaking Potential

Beyond writing, the pencil has become a subject of peculiar human ambition. From record-breaking feats like snapping 102 pencils in a minute or karate-chopping 164, to the impressive structural engineering of stacking 419 "pencil stories" (a Jenga-like technique), the pencil remains a versatile and fascinating object. As one mathematician estimated, the graphite in a single pencil can draw a line over 700 miles long—a testament to the efficiency and history packed into that simple yellow stick.
