Building a model is only the first step; proving its output is functional is the true test. Nguyen’s team utilized CRISPR—the molecular scissors used in gene therapy—as a benchmark. By asking Evo to generate a CRISPR system from scratch, the researchers were able to test whether the AI-designed proteins and RNA could actually cut DNA. The success of this experiment, confirmed by lab results that mirrored natural biological behavior, proved that AI-generated DNA could be functional and realistic. While the team’s attempt to generate a full genome resulted in a "rough sketch," Nguyen anticipates that within years, AI will be capable of generating whole, functional genomes.

The Future of Medicine and Beyond

This capability opens the door to a new era of personalized medicine and beyond. Nguyen envisions a future where an AI could analyze a patient's genome to predict drug reactions or guide treatments for conditions like sickle cell disease. More ambitiously, he suggests the potential to design a "24th chapter" of the human genome—a new chromosome specifically engineered to fight diseases on demand. The talk also touches on the controversial frontiers of de-extinction, such as the effort to resurrect the woolly mammoth, and the possibility of engineering microbes to terraform Mars.

Innovation, Ethics, and the Path Forward

Nguyen acknowledges the "unsettling" nature of this technology, particularly concerns regarding biosecurity and the potential for creating bioweapons. However, he argues that halting progress is neither practical nor beneficial. Instead, he advocates for a balanced approach: embracing innovation while simultaneously using AI to monitor and defend against potential threats. Ultimately, Nguyen concludes that we are no longer just passive observers of our biological code; we are now the authors. To truly understand biology, we must participate in its creation, recognizing that the future of life is ours to design.
