📋 Summary

The Ritual: The Matamoros Cult

The first story recounts the tragic abduction of Mark Kilroy, a college student on spring break in Matamoros, Mexico, in 1989. While separated from his friends, Kilroy was lured by a cult leader named Constanzo, who practiced a dark form of black magic known as "Palo." Constanzo convinced his followers that performing gruesome human sacrifices would grant them invincibility. According to the podcast, Constanzo believed that the more agony he inflicted on his victims—specifically ensuring they "die screaming"—the more power the gods would grant his followers.

After being kidnapped, Kilroy was subjected to horrific torture. He was eventually killed with a machete, and in a gruesome display of ritualistic desecration, his brain was boiled in a "sacred cauldron," and his bones were later used to make jewelry. The investigation revealed that Kilroy was one of at least 16, and possibly as many as 26, victims of this cult, which operated out of a secluded ranch. Constanzo ultimately avoided capture by having his followers kill him, while other cult members received lengthy prison sentences.

The Most Feared Girl in Mexico: The Legend of Magdalena Solis

The second story details the rise of Magdalena Solis, a woman who became a terrifying cult leader in the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains in 1963. The Hernandez brothers, two con artists, initially swindled the poor, isolated villagers of La Yerba Buena by posing as prophets of an "exiled Incan god." To solidify their control, they recruited Solis to pose as an Incan goddess.

What began as a calculated con spiraled into madness. Solis, who had lived a life of little power as a prostitute, became delusional and intoxicated by the villagers' absolute reverence. She demanded blood rituals, initially using farm animals before escalating to human sacrifice. The atmosphere of fear was so profound that when two villagers attempted to flee, Solis ordered the community to lynch them. She eventually required the victims to be alive while she "carved their heart out" to consume their blood, believing this was necessary to sustain her status as a goddess.

The horror was uncovered after a 14-year-old boy, Sebastian Guerrero, witnessed a sacrifice and fled to the police. Along with officer Luis Martinez, he returned to the cave, only to be captured and sacrificed themselves. When authorities finally raided the village, they found a cult so deeply brainwashed that even after the Hernandez brothers were killed in a shootout, the surviving villagers refused to testify against Solis, fearing the "Incan goddess" more than the legal system. Solis was eventually sentenced to 50 years in prison, where she later died.
