Pollution, overfishing, and rising carbon dioxide levels—which make the ocean "hotter and more acidic"—are driving a rapid decline in reef health. A 2011 study by the World Resources Institute revealed that 60% of the world’s coral reefs are threatened, with projections suggesting that over 90% could be in danger by 2030. This trend has caused immense sadness for marine biologists like Dr. Vaughan, who has witnessed the degradation of these ecosystems over his decades of work.
Hope emerged from a serendipitous discovery in Dr. Vaughan's laboratory. While handling coral, he accidentally broke a piece and noticed that instead of dying, it underwent a rapid healing process. This led to the development of "microfragmentation," a revolutionary technology that involves breaking corals into "very small broken up pieces."
This method triggers the coral’s natural healing, allowing them to grow "25 to 50 times faster than they would in other situations." Dr. Vaughan noted that a piece of coral that would typically take two years to grow to the size of a large coin could now achieve that size in just two weeks. By cultivating these fragments in large water tanks and then attaching them to dead reef structures, his team is actively restoring the Florida Reef Tract.

Despite being over 60, he remains committed to his mission, aiming to reintroduce "a million corals back on the reef" within the next three to five years.
