The Science of Awe: How Wonder Fuels Curiosity and Discovery

In this episode of Wow in the World, hosts Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz explore the profound psychological connection between experiencing a sense of "awe"—or as they affectionately call it, "wow"—and the human drive for scientific exploration. Through the lens of their latest project, a mobile museum dubbed "Wow on Wheels," the hosts investigate why humans are naturally compelled to fill the "I don't know holes" in their knowledge.

The Hypothesis of Awe

Mindy introduces a study published in the journal Cognition and Emotion by researcher Jonathan McPhetress from the University of Rochester. The core hypothesis posits that when humans encounter something awe-inspiring, we become acutely aware of the limits of our own understanding. This realization creates a cognitive gap, and the desire to fill these gaps drives us toward scientific investigation. As Guy Raz notes, "wow or a sense of awe can lead people to love science."

Experimental Evidence: Manipulating Wonder

To test this, Dr. McPhetress conducted experiments involving "awe groups" and "control groups." The awe groups were shown high-quality, 3D virtual videos of natural phenomena like the aurora borealis, intentionally designed to spark wonder. Conversely, the control groups were shown mundane or silly videos.

Following the viewing, participants were asked questions about their curiosity regarding the natural world. In a telling behavioral experiment, participants were given the choice between visiting a science museum or an art museum. The results were striking: 68% of those who watched the awe-inspiring videos chose the science museum, compared to only 32% who opted for the art museum. This suggests that the experience of awe creates a specific mental state that prioritizes the acquisition of knowledge.

From Awe to Action

Throughout the episode, the character Dennis serves as a real-time subject for this experiment. Initially skeptical of science—claiming he doesn't believe in things he cannot see, like air—Dennis undergoes a transformation after touring the "Wow on Wheels" museum. As he encounters various artifacts, he experiences a sense of surprise and curiosity that moves him "beyond the realm of his own imagination." By the end of the show, Dennis is inspired to start his own "rival museum of invisible science," proving that even the most reluctant individuals can be sparked by a sense of wonder.

The Never-Ending Endeavor

Mindy and Guy Raz conclude that science is not a static destination but a "global human endeavor." The "I don't know holes" are not a failure of intelligence, but an invitation to learn. The hosts emphasize that because there is a "never-ending supply of wow and wonder," the scientific process is infinite.

Ultimately, the episode serves as a reminder that science is the tool we use to "make sense of the world and our place in it." By embracing the gaps in our knowledge rather than fearing them, we remain in a constant state of discovery, ensuring that the spirit of exploration continues to fuel our future.
