📋 Summary

The Illusion of a Perfect Life

On the night of November 8, 2010, the Pan family’s quiet life in a Markham, Ontario suburb was shattered by a brutal home invasion. Bic Pan and her husband, Han, were Vietnamese refugees who had worked tirelessly for 30 years to provide their children with a stable, prosperous life in Canada. Their daughter, Jennifer, was viewed as a high-achieving student and gifted piano teacher, seemingly destined for a successful career as a pharmacist. However, this image was a facade. Jennifer had been living a "fictitious life" for nearly a decade, forging report cards, diplomas, and university acceptance letters to satisfy her parents' rigid expectations. When her parents finally discovered the truth, they imposed strict controls on her life, treating her like a "prisoner" in her own home. Desperate to escape their authority and regain her freedom, Jennifer conspired to have her parents murdered.

The Orchestrated Execution

Jennifer reached out to her ex-boyfriend, Daniel Wong, with whom she had maintained a flirtatious relationship. To manipulate him into helping her, she fabricated a story about being "attacked and raped" by a group of men, eventually persuading him to connect her with associates who could carry out a hit. On the night of the incident, three gunmen entered the home through a door Jennifer had left unlocked. They dragged Bic and Han to the basement, demanding money. In a chilling detail revealed during the investigation, Han recalled that when he begged the gunmen not to hurt his daughter, Jennifer—who was being led by one of the intruders—leaned in and "whispered something" to her captor. The two then began "laughing together," a moment that shattered Han's realization that his own daughter had "arranged for he and his wife's execution."

The Brutal Reality

Under the guise of a robbery, the intruders forced Jennifer to guide them through the house to search for valuables. While she was being tied to a banister, the gunmen executed Bic and shot Han multiple times. Despite his severe injuries, Han survived, eventually crawling out of the basement to the driveway where police found him. Bic, however, was found dead on the basement floor, covered by a blanket the gunmen had used to hide their faces from their victims as they fired. Jennifer later attempted to play the victim, calling 911 while claiming to be restrained, even promising the intruders she would wait for them to leave before alerting authorities.

Unraveling the Deception

The investigation quickly turned toward Jennifer as police discovered a "burner phone" hidden in her room, containing incriminating text messages that linked her, Daniel Wong, and the gunmen to the planning of the crime. Furthermore, police learned that Jennifer had continued to contact the conspirators even after the attack, expressing concern that her father had survived. When Han emerged from a medically induced coma, his testimony confirmed the betrayal. Jennifer Pan, Daniel Wong, and the accomplices were eventually found guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder, receiving life sentences. The case stands as a haunting testament to how the pressure of perfectionism and a web of lies can culminate in a horrific act of violence against one's own family.

But before she walked over to the couch where her mother was to give her a hug, Jennifer noticed something moving around outside on the dark street.
Jennifer stopped where she was and just looked out the window, but she couldn't see anything unusual.
So she walked over to the front door and looked out the little window on it, and still she couldn't see anything.
So she shrugged and walked back over to her mother, who had clearly noticed Jennifer looking outside like she had seen something, and Jennifer just said, oh, I thought I saw something moving around out there, but it was nothing.
