Guy Raz poses a hypothetical race between Usain Bolt and a rabbit, noting that the rabbit would easily win because most four-legged animals "land on their toes" while running. Anthropologist James Weber from the University of Arizona investigated this phenomenon. He discovered that while landing on toes extends the foot length for animals, the human foot has evolved differently. Through an experiment comparing people walking normally versus those walking on their toes, Weber found that "landing on our toes actually slows us humans down." The study concluded that our unique way of walking—landing on our heels first—is a "trick of evolution" that provides humans with increased "length, efficiency, and stability." This biomechanical design allows humans to conserve energy and move more effectively compared to attempting to mimic the toe-striking gait of other animals.
