As global temperatures reach record highs—with 2023 noted as the hottest year on record—the challenge of maintaining livable indoor environments has become a critical issue. While the human body possesses the biological mechanism of sweat—the process of passing salty water through the skin to lose heat—our homes often lack natural cooling capabilities. In regions like India, where summer temperatures can exceed 45 degrees Celsius, this has necessitated both ancient wisdom and modern innovation to protect vulnerable populations.
In North India, particularly in states like Uttar Pradesh, extreme temperatures pose significant health and economic risks. Roshni Devaka, a consultant for the Mahila Housing Trust, highlights the precarious situation of families living in small, one-bedroom dwellings. These homes often lack ventilation—the movement of fresh air—due to a complete absence of windows.
For many residents, the structural design of their homes exacerbates the heat. Thin roofs absorb solar energy, turning living spaces into ovens. This is further complicated by the lack of reliable infrastructure; many families face frequent power cuts, which are periods when the supply of electricity is interrupted. Because many of these residents are daily wage earners—people who earn money on a day-to-day basis—the impact of extreme heat is twofold: it threatens their physical health and prevents them from working, thereby cutting off their only source of income.
The Mahila Housing Trust has implemented highly effective, low-cost solutions to mitigate these conditions. The most successful intervention has been the use of reflective anti-solar white paint. By applying this paint to roofs, room temperatures can be reduced by up to four degrees. While this may seem modest, it significantly improves the quality of life, allowing families to cook, work, and sleep indoors. To ensure accessibility, the trust subsidises the cost of the paint, paying for a portion of the expense so that communities only pay 15 to 20 percent of the actual price. This initiative has been scaled across cities like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Jodhpur, where the trust even painted an entire slum—a poor and crowded area of a city characterized by substandard housing.
Beyond modern paint, India has a 5,000-year history of architectural adaptation. A prime example is the Jali, a traditional honeycomb pattern used in windows. This design features small holes set into stone or wooden frames, which effectively block direct sunlight while cooling the air as it enters the home.
The combination of ancient architectural techniques like Jali and modern, subsidized initiatives demonstrates a resilient approach to climate adaptation. By focusing on simple, reflective technologies and community-based financial support, organizations are successfully helping families survive the increasing intensity of global heatwaves, proving that even small adjustments can make a profound difference in human livelihood.
