📋 Summary

The Third Voyage: A Departure into the Unknown

In the opening of the third voyage, the narrator finds himself restless shortly after returning home. The allure of travel proves irresistible when Captain William Robinson, commander of the Hopewell, offers him the position of surgeon for a journey to the East Indies. Despite the emotional difficulty of leaving his family, the narrator’s "thirst I had to see the world" compels him to accept, setting sail on August 5, 1706.

Betrayal and Survival: The Pirate Encounter

The expedition takes a harrowing turn during a trading detour near Tonquin. After the captain commissions a smaller sloop for local trade, the vessel is intercepted by two pirate ships. Outmatched and "ill-equipped to defend ourselves," the crew is quickly overwhelmed. The narrator describes the brutality of the aftermath: his men are forced into labor as slaves, while he is cast adrift in a small canoe with nothing but "four days' supplies." Left to his own devices, he navigates to a nearby rocky island, where he spends a night of profound despair, contemplating "how impossible it was to survive in such a place and how miserable my end would be."

The Phenomenon of Laputa: An Island in the Skies

The narrative shifts from terrestrial survival to supernatural wonder when the narrator witnesses a celestial anomaly. While walking along the rocks, the sun is suddenly obscured by a "vast, solid body." This object, hovering approximately two miles high, is a flying island. Using his "pocket glass," the narrator observes a "great number of people moving up and down the sides" of this floating landmass. His amazement is palpable, as he realizes this is an island "inhabited by men who were able, it seemed, to raise, sink or put the island into motion as they saw fit."

Ascent to the Heavens

As the flying island maneuvers closer to the rocky shore, the narrator catches glimpses of the intricate architecture adorning its exterior, specifically "galleries and staircases" that connect the various levels. In a desperate attempt to make contact, he waves his cap and handkerchief, shouting to the observers above. The response is calculated and orderly: the island adjusts its altitude until it is less than a hundred yards away. A chain is lowered with a seat, and the narrator is hoisted upward by pulleys, marking his transition from the desolate, rocky island to the mysterious, gravity-defying civilization of Laputa.
