📋 Summary

The Golden Advice: A Lesson in Wisdom and Integrity

In this episode of Circle Round, we follow the journey of a hardworking farmer named Orla and her talkative parrot, Scout. Living in poverty and struggling to survive, Orla seeks employment to improve her life. Her journey leads her to a wise, elderly farmer who offers her a unique deal: three years of labor in exchange for either 30 gold pieces or three pieces of advice that changed the farmer's life.

The Three Pieces of Wisdom

Orla ultimately chooses the advice, trusting in the farmer's evident success. The three rules provided were:

  1. "Resist the temptation to take a shortcut."
  2. "Honesty and wisdom go hand in hand."
  3. "Never underestimate the value of kindness."

Additionally, the farmer presents Orla with a large loaf of "crusty golden bread," instructing her to break it open only when she arrives back at her cottage.

Testing the Advice

Throughout her journey home, Orla faces situations that put these teachings to the test:

  • Avoiding Shortcuts: When a merchant suggests a "perfect shortcut" through a "deep, dark wood," Orla remembers the first rule. By choosing the long way, she unknowingly avoids a dangerous encounter with a "pack of wolves" that later terrorizes the merchant who took the shortcut.
  • Honesty and Wisdom: While seeking a room at an inn, Orla is tempted to trade the mysterious loaf of bread to cover her costs. Recalling that "honesty and wisdom go hand in hand," she realizes that breaking her promise to the farmer would be dishonest. Instead, she offers to work in the kitchen to earn her keep, demonstrating integrity.
  • The Value of Kindness: When the bedraggled merchant—who had been robbed after taking the shortcut—arrives at the inn, Orla chooses to act on the third piece of advice: "Never underestimate the value of kindness." She gives her room to the merchant, choosing to sleep in the barn instead. This act of compassion creates a bond between them.

The True Reward

Upon returning home, Orla initially feels dejected, believing she has returned with nothing but words. However, upon following the final instruction to "break the bread open," she discovers the "30 gold pieces" baked inside, proving that the farmer had honored the agreement all along. Furthermore, the merchant she helped later returns to gift her a "magnificent black stallion," providing her with the means to improve her farm operations permanently.

Conclusion

Orla’s story serves as a profound reminder that true wealth is not just about currency. While she gained financial stability, her life was transformed because she gained "new wisdom, the kind that's worth its weight in gold." By adhering to principles of integrity, patience, and kindness, Orla navigated life's challenges and secured a prosperous future, proving that the most valuable assets we carry are the lessons we learn.
