📋 Summary

The Giant's Causeway: Brain Power Triumphs Over Brute Force

In this episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Sheer recounts the Irish legend of "The Giant's Causeway." The story serves as a whimsical exploration of the idea that, while physical strength is often admired, true power resides in the "brain"—the most powerful part of the human body.

The Legend of the Giants

The narrative centers on two colossal figures: Finn McCool, the "greatest warrior the Emerald Isle has ever seen," and his Scottish rival, Benandonner, known as the "Mountain of Thunder." Finn, standing over 50 feet tall with legs "as thick as tree trunks," is a formidable force. However, he is constantly harassed by Benandonner, a bully who hurls insults across the North Channel. Driven by frustration, Finn constructs a path of "40,000 stone columns"—the hexagonal structures known as the Giant's Causeway—to cross the sea and confront his rival.

The Realization of a Threat

Finn’s bravado falters when he finally spots Benandonner approaching. The Scottish giant is revealed to be four times his size, with legs "as thick as grain silos" and hands "as big as modern-day SUVs." Faced with an opponent who could "squash me like a bug" or "flatten me like a pancake," the mighty Finn becomes "petrified." It is at this critical juncture that his wife, Una, steps in to demonstrate that intelligence is a far more effective weapon than physical prowess.

Una’s Clever Scheme

Una, described as "quick" and "clever," orchestrates a brilliant deception to save her husband. She instructs Finn to dress as a baby, wrapping him in "bed sheets" and placing a "frilly, lacy bonnet" on his head. She then stages a scene where the "baby" consumes an enormous meal—including "loaves of bread, wheels of cheese, sacks of potatoes, strings of sausages," and "100 golden-crusted scones."

When Benandonner arrives, Una plays the role of a doting mother. She subtly suggests that if the baby is this large and voracious, his father, Finn McCool, must be a titan of unimaginable proportions. The psychological impact is immediate; when Finn, playing along, tosses a "big pile of boulders" high into the sky with ease, the "Mountain of Thunder" is terrified by the prospect of facing such a powerful warrior.

The Retreat and Legacy

Overwhelmed by the fear that he is "no mightier than a molehill," Benandonner flees back toward Scotland, destroying the causeway behind him so that he might never encounter the "fierce and ferocious Finn McCool" again.

The tale concludes by bridging myth with reality. While scientists attribute the hexagonal columns to "ancient volcanoes" that erupted millions of years ago, the legend persists as an "eternal reminder" of both the physical might of the Irish warrior and, more importantly, the "brilliant brainy giantess" whose wit secured their safety. The story serves as a poignant reminder that even when faced with overwhelming physical odds, a sharp mind and creative thinking can overcome the most daunting of challenges.
