It wasn't until the 7th century that Chinese alchemists—who were actually searching for a "potion for immortality"—stumbled upon the fundamental recipe for gunpowder. By combining "saltpeter" (potassium nitrate), "charcoal," and "sulfur," they created a substance they called "huo yao," or "fire drug." This mixture proved to be a powerful chemical explosive that eventually replaced bamboo as the primary material for fireworks.

The Chemistry of Color and Combustion

The science behind a fireworks display is a masterclass in chemistry. Gunpowder works because of the specific properties of its three ingredients:

  • Sulfur: Ignites at a very low temperature, requiring only a small spark.
  • Charcoal: Provides a massive amount of fuel, keeping the reaction going.
  • Saltpeter: Releases oxygen during combustion, which feeds the fire and causes the reaction to happen so rapidly that it results in an explosion rather than a simple burn.

To achieve the vibrant colors we see today, chemists add different elements to the gunpowder. For instance, "barium" produces green, "copper" creates blue, "strontium" results in red, and "zirconium" is used to create the brilliant, bright effects seen in "waterfall fires."

Global Displays and Modern Records

Today, China remains the dominant force in the industry, producing approximately 90% of the world's fireworks. While Australia has a proud history of manufacturing—dating back to an engineer in Newcastle who began producing fireworks for the Sydney Harbour Bridge opening—the scale of global displays has reached new heights. The Philippines once hosted a display lasting over an hour, while the United Arab Emirates, specifically Ras Al Khaimah, holds records for the longest "waterfall" (over 37 kilometers) and the tallest "tower of fireworks."

The Controversy of Cracker Night

While fireworks are a staple of New Year’s celebrations, the tradition of personal fireworks, known as "Cracker Night," has become highly controversial. In the mid-20th century, Cracker Night was a beloved annual event in Australia. However, due to safety concerns—including injuries, property damage, and grass fires—most states have banned the private sale and use of fireworks.

Today, only the Northern Territory and Tasmania maintain versions of this tradition. In the Northern Territory, "Territory Day" allows citizens to purchase fireworks with evocative names like "Bad Neighbour" and "Nuclear Havoc." Despite the fun, the risks remain high; a few years ago, the event resulted in "27 injuries" and nearly "700 grass fires." Furthermore, the noise continues to be a concern for wildlife and pets, leading authorities to encourage community-led displays rather than individual ones to minimize the negative impact on animals.
