📋 Summary

The Eternal Darkness and the Call to Adventure

In the frozen expanse of the far north, a young man and his grandmother live in a world trapped in "eternal night." The story begins with a poignant inquiry: why did the sun, which once provided "radiant luminous light" during long summer days, vanish without a trace? The world has been plunged into a state where the sun "set and never rose again." While others have ventured into the "inky black tundra" and failed to return, the young man experiences a "tiny flame, a fire of determination" in his heart. He resolves to restore the natural order, embarking on a quest to bring back the light, day, and night.

The Raven’s Gift and the Journey South

As the young man traverses the harsh wilderness, he encounters a raven who offers both guidance and a magical boon. The raven, representing the wisdom of the wild, reveals that the source of the missing light lies in the south. Before departing, the raven plucks a feather and gives it to the young man, noting, "You'll know what to do when the time comes." This mysterious token proves to be the key to his success, transforming from a mere object into a catalyst for his physical metamorphosis.

The Discovery of the Selfish Hoarder

Upon reaching a "perfectly round" hill in the south, the young man discovers a hollow where a man has been hoarding the sun within his hut. The old man, driven by a desire for a "personal summer" every day of the year, has been shoveling snow to create a barrier, effectively hiding the light from the rest of the world. The protagonist confronts him, asserting that the light does not belong to one individual, but rather, "it belongs to all of us." This climax highlights the tension between selfish desire and the communal need for balance.

The Transformation and the Restoration of Seasons

In a daring act, the young man steals the "blazing ball of light" and flees. As he is pursued by the old man, he remembers the raven’s gift. By placing the feather behind his ear, he undergoes a miraculous transformation into a raven, allowing him to escape and soar through the sky.

As he flies back toward his village, he distributes the light in fragments. By throwing down hunks of light, he creates the cycle of days; by spacing them out, he creates the "long nights of winter," and by casting them down rapidly, he brings about the "long golden days of summer." Through his bravery, he restores the natural rhythm of the world. Upon returning home, he reunites with his grandmother, and the world is finally returned to a state where, "after a cold sunless winter come the long golden days of summer," demonstrating that true light is found in sharing and the natural harmony of the seasons.
